  1. 2.3 Acceleration Unit 1 Chapter 2 CPO Science Courtney Lewis Stapley Junior High School

  2. Acceleration • Change in Speed/Change in Time • How much is your speed changing/how much time passed • Increases as you go downhill, the steeper the hill, the greater the acceleration

  3. Units of Acceleration • English: • Miles per hour: mph/s • Metric: • (cm/s)/s • (m/s)/s

  4. Examples of Acceleration • Acceleration: can be increasing (+) or decreasing (-) • Deceleration: decreasing speed over time • Zero acceleration: speed is constant, like cruise control • Free fall: greatest acceleration, no other force interfering with gravity

  5. Acceleration on a Graph • Acceleration is the SLOPE of a Speed vs. Time Graph • Slopes: • Positive: Increasing change in speed • Negative: Decreasing change in speed • Zero Slope/Flat: No change in speed

  6. Calculating Acceleration from Graph • Draw a right triangle to find the slope OR • Pick two points, find the difference in the y’s and divide it by the difference in the x’s

  7. Homework • Assignment 2.2 p. 39: Vocab Sets 2 & 3, Concept Review 6—12, Problems 5—13 • DUE Friday, November 19, 2010
