  1. DEVELOPMENT OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS AND EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN VIETNAMESE UNIVERSITIES Ph¹m V¨n Cù, NguyÔn ThÞ Thóy H»ng Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS CARGIS Hanoi Univesity of Sciences pvchanoi@vnn.vn

  2. Content • Development of Technology Overview • Output Quality Requirement for Remote Sensing and GIS Training • Current Situation of the Teaching in Universities • Discussion on the reason • How to overcome the short coming

  3. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT • Technology Push to rapid for daily requirements in developing countries • Multispectral come to Hyperspectral • High Spatial Resolution come to Very Hight Resolution • Small Satellite Concept become an operational reality • Constellation of Small and Micro Satellites and Chart signed between Space Power Countries • Increased Integration of RS, GIS, GPS in Application • Multiscaling Approach • Multi and International Alliance in Space Application

  4. 80m (MSS) 0.6m quickbird 1-4m ikonos 2.5-20 m spot2-5 15-30 m ETM

  6. INTEGRATION OF RS, GIS, GPS • POSITIONING, • OBSERVATION KNOWLEDGE BASE • ANALYSIS • MODELLING DATA BASE DECISION MAKING USERS

  7. ROLE OF RS AND GIS IN DECISION SUPPORT MAKING Information Action DATA Knowledge Data Base Knowledge Base Policy Hardware, Software SOCIAL SITUATION

  8. WHO PARTICIPATES IN KNOWLEDGE BASE SETTING? Knowledge Base Managers Thematicians Engineers

  9. What is role of education and training? • To translate data into knowledge we needs good sciences • To obtain good knowledge we need good university • To have good university we need: • Good Teacher and Professor • Good Infrastructure • Good Syllabus • Good Teaching Methods

  10. OUTPUT REQUIREMENT • Solid Knowledge in Remote Sensing: • Physics of Remote Sensing • Image Processing • Integration and Remotely Sensed Data Modelling • Solid Knowledge in GIS: • Data Models • Data Base Designing • Data Analyis and Modelling

  11. DECISIVE FACTORS Student output quality STUDENT INFRASTRUCTURE DATA SYLLABUS TEACHING METHODS UNIVERSITY AND TEACHER

  12. CURRENT STATUS CAPACITIES OF RS, GIS NEED OF DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL TO COVER DEVELOPMENT NEEDS CURRENT CAPACITY OF UNIVERSITY SYLLABUS REQUESTED QUALITY INFRASTRUCTURE (DATA, LIBRARY, INTERNET ETC.) STUDENT INPUT QUALITY TEACHING METHODS

  13. OBJECTIVE REASONS? • Rapid technology push? • Misunderstanding on the role and capcacities of the technology? • « Poor family » approach in techno development? • Lack of appropriate policy for RS,GIS infrastructures investment? • Absence of the coherence between teaching and reseach? • Lack of overall country coordination?

  14. Subjective reasons? • Lack of high standard syllabus? • Lack of demo data? • Absence of good library (internet access to electronic reviews)? • Lack of good teaching methods? • Lack of time for students?

  15. RECOMMENDATIONS (1) • To concentrate to Bachelor Degree • To ameliorate teaching methods • To build up syllabus at international standards • To teach methodology • To set up common use laboratory at the big universities • To set up long term applied research program and fundamental research in future • Vocational Activities and alliance with private sector

  16. RECOMMENDATIONS (2) • To involve student in research activities • To extend RS and GIS teaching to other disciplines other thangeo-sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Sociology) • To issue the national coordination mechanism • To reinforce internation cooperation

  17. Thank you for your attention!!!
