  11. “My City was Gone” by the Pretenders Background • The song was written in 1982 by Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde, and reflected her growing interest in environmental and social concerns; the lyrics take the form of an autobiographical lament with the singer returning to her childhood home of Ohio and discovering that rampant development and pollution had destroyed the "pretty countryside" of her youth.

  12. “Big Yellow Taxi” by the Counting CrowsBackground • Written on her first trip to Hawaii in 1970, 'Big Yellow Taxi‘, is about her trip to Hawaii when she woke up the next morning, she threw back the curtains and saw beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, she looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke her heart... this blight on paradise. • The song is known for its environmental concern – "They paved paradise to put up a parking lot" and "Hey farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now" – and sentimental sound. The line "They took all the trees, and put 'em in a tree museum / And charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em." refers to Foster Botanical Garden in downtown Honolulu, which is a living museum of tropical plants, some rare and endangered.
