  1. Please take out your tan packet and your English notebook (you don’t need to write down today’s learning target) Happy Tuesday! Learning Target: Evaluate your introduction, choose best outlining method 2/25/14 “Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.” - A.A Milne

  2. Agenda 2/25/14 • Evaluate your introductions • Outlining format choices • Work on outlining Homework: • Complete intro and essay outline due by the BEG. of class Friday (printed out or bring your tech device with the outline on it!) Remember: If you’re not caught up with notes by the end of the class period Thursday, you’ll be REQUIRED to stay after school Thursday during conference period. No exceptions!

  3. Evaluate your introductions • In groups of four, you’ll read everyone’s introductions and use the rubric to identify areas of growth. • Be polite, but honest with each other! • Choose your group’s highest scoring introduction to share with the class

  4. Outlining • Why outline? • To figure out what order you should present the information in • To decide where you need to cut info, or where you need to collect more info • To identify connections between your content

  5. Outline steps • Identify the main categories of your paper. • Create subcategories • Include specific details

  6. A section’s not a paragraph! • Remember- • you only want ONE idea per paragraph- new idea, new paragraph. • Think “big to little”

  7. Outline options • “Triangles and Boxes” • “Roman Numerals and Indentations” • Easy Bib Outline? • Workflowy?

  8. Triangles and Boxes • Benefits: • Very kinesthetic • Easy to draw • Easy to see “big picture” • Drawbacks: • Kind of messy • Not as linear

  9. Roman Numerals and Indentations • Benefits: • Very linear • Structured, so easier to expand into full paper • Can copy and paste from notes • Drawbacks: • Frustrating auto-formatting • Harder to see “big picture” as you’re working on it

  10. Easy Bib Outlining • https://www-secure.easybib.com/auth/index/login?previous=http://easybib.com/notebook • Benefits: • Drag and drop-able • Visual and kinesthetic • Mrs. N knows more about it • Drawbacks: • Techy? • Mrs. T has no idea how to use it 

  11. Workflowy • https://workflowy.com/ • Benefits: • Easy to expand and copy and paste info • Can be used on pretty much any device • Drawbacks: • Techy • You need to sign up for an account • Mrs. T doesn’t know much about it! 

  12. No matter what you choose- • YOU NEED SPECIFIC DETAILS • That includes references to citations, specific sources, actual content • You need complete topic sentences • You need to include your complete essay introduction • You need to have a complete essay outline for the beginning of class Friday • No one will be allowed to go print- do it BEFORE class for credit! • You will be evaluated according to the rubric

  13. Work time • The rest of today’s class time • Next two days in the lab • After school help Thursday • Mrs. N help any time the library is available!
