  1. Cisco Product Manager Case Competition Team Name: Fuqua’s Finest Program: Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business Team Members: Sam Baker, Donghoe Gu, Hyunkyung Lee, Jig Patel, Pablo Zilleruelo October 8, 2019

  2. Agenda • Problemdefinition • Market trends • Key players’ needs • Solution • Business feasibility • Takeaways

  3. Problem Definition … and semi-autonomous technology is not solving the problem

  4. Problem Definition (cont’d) • Data (see below) is not being processed optimally • On-road Vehicle to Vehicle data • Infrastructure data (Traffic light information) • Real-time information (Weather and traffic conditions) • Information sources (Hospitals, police, gas stations) Opportunity to make the road user’s experience more efficient and safer through a reliable network Private, personal data is not well-protected • Personal travel patterns • Real-time location How can we use the data efficiently while also keeping it safe?

  5. Market Trends (Autonomous Vehicles) Expected market size* What peers do • Fastest growing segment in the world • Focus on cloud and smart, connected computer devices • Acquired Mobileye ($15 bn) ($ billion) • Launching AI cloud in EU • Work with Vodafone for vehicle comm. system • Work with car-makers CAGR 19% • Set up autonomous strategy and launched MS connected vehicle platform • Work with car-makers * Includes software, mobile apps, telematics features, and accessories for autonomous driving

  6. Key Players’ Needs Considering these needs, what do we do?

  7. Solution • Cisco should prioritize data processing and security • While other players focus on the logistics and design of autonomous cars, Cisco should seize an overlooked yet vital role: • The processing and protection of data generated by autonomous vehicles, the environment, and organizations (government, private businesses) • Cisco could connect all these actors by leveraging its own existing capabilities • Benefits of Cisco products being used with autonomous vehicles: • Create global and local network for cars and the environment • Privacy and security of drivers’ travel data • Anticipation of possible accidents, especially if Cisco products allow for communication between two or more vehicles • Deliver data to third parties only in emergency situations (police, hospitals)

  8. Solution (cont’d) What does this mean for Cisco? Managing data • Due to the huge production of data from and related to autonomous vehicles, Cisco needs to expand and improve its data center capacity • Customers are very concerned with personal data privacy, and autonomous vehicles could lead to larger issues with security • Thus Cisco can take a leadership role in providing data security through expanding capacity in areas such as cloud security, advanced malware protection, and next-generation firewall Data security

  9. Business Feasibility • Cisco is already trusted brand in the data management and security space • Partner with automakers - vehicle manufacturers contract with Cisco to fill all data housing, processing, and protection needs • Existing Cisco products can be utilized and/or upgraded to meet customers’ (automakers) needs • R&D and other development costs lower than entering new market or building new products • Need to expand data center capacity and staff - develop protocol for specific management of this type of data • Work with auto manufacturers and government to protect consumers’ needs

  10. Takeaways Increasing amount of data available that is not being processed optimally to make the driver experience as efficient as possible. 1 Drivers are willing to pay for safety and to keep their travel patterns private, while government is pursuing efficiency and control of emergency cases. 2 Other players in the industry are focusing their investments on electronic equipment, while data management is not as readily addressed. 3 Cisco has a tremendous opportunity to get into the autonomous vehicle business and become a leader in data processing and security. 4 Cisco has the knowledge and the technology in place to assume this role; however, it will require an expansion in data center capacity and other accommodations. 5
