  2. Emotional Design • Norman discusses the ramification of teapot design, can you think of any other examples of unusable objects? • Elements of product review; usability, aesthetics and practicality. What do these terms mean?

  3. The Broad Strokes of Emotional Design • Visceral-gut reactions/appearances • Behavioral-effectiveness of use • Reflective-rationalization and intellectualization

  4. It’s okay to be American! • This is an exaggeration. Everyone develops a personal connection to objects that they own. They are more than material possessions.

  5. The key to applying the three levels. • Knowing that there are three reactive levels is only the first step. It is key to understand the connection to emotions and cognition. • Emotions are hot and animalistic • Cognition is cool and logical

  6. Side Effect of New Technolgy • Evidenced well by comedian Eddie Izzard • It is not uncommon for us to hate the things we interact with. • What things do you have to use that you hate to use? Why?

  7. Why is fun important? • Emotion is invaluable to everyday life. • Utility and usability are important, but our emotions round out the experience. • Can you think of ugly things that you like to use and gorgeous things that you hate to use?

  8. Usability Defined… • The field of usability combines cognitive psychology, computer science, engineering, and design. • Norman uses the example of the first color Apple display. What was his evaluation of using color and how did he come to his conclusion?

  9. The change in design methodologies and evaluations • Business used to dictate that logic and cognition will drive all application development. • Scientists have learned that devices need to be pleasurable to use if they are to propagate and survive. • Can you think of any software/application examples that demonstrate the push/pull between these different areas of design and use?

Cognition and Affectation • Cognition is a logical process that takes time to develop • Affect is the gut reaction-- the general term for the judgmental system, conscious or unconscious. • Emotion is the conscious experience of Affect • Consider the plank… • How do you pick a restaurant? • Emotions are tightly associated with behavioral exhibitions. Pavlovian associations.

We are all designers. 224 • How do you arrange your dorm/apartment? • What creative solutions have you needed to come up with to accommodate your budget and space? • Our personal design is often more important and valuable to us than any items that we can purchase. • Personal websites/blogs/etc. • Design is critical, but personal interaction is more important.

  12. Consider your roles • Break up into groups for the final project. • Do you consider yourself a programmer, producer, content provider, image-maker, etc.?
