Aims of the session By the end of this session, you will be able to: • Explain the purpose of departmental reviews and how they fit into the University’s quality assurance processes • Understand the role of the Student Panel Member and what is entailed/expected of you • Understand the process of a Departmental Review and be prepared for it!

  4. What is a Departmental Review? • A broad and deep review of a specific academic department within which full consideration is given to • Management and organisation of the Department • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching • Research performance and the management of research activity • Management of knowledge exchange activity in the Department • Management and distribution of resources within the Department • The Departments Strategic Plan, its fit with the University and Faculty Strategic Plans • Output is a Review Report setting out issues and recommendations to which the Department is required to respond within 6 months.

  8. What is Quality Enhancement? Using the following framework of questions: • where are we now? • where do we want to be in the future? • how are we going to get there? • how will we know when we get there? Scottish Higher Education Enhancement Committee Enhancement Framework 2008

What is the Student Learning Experience? • Exactly what it says on the tin! • Everything which relates to the learning experience of students on the courses provided by the department • This can be both directly related or indirectly related • You are a learner, so use your own experiences to understand the journey students go through on their courses in the department you are reviewing

  10. What would you do? • In relation to your own department(s), try to think of at least one thing you would like the department to: • Start doing • Stop doing • Carry on doing

  11. The Student Learning Experience? Curriculum Learning resources and their deployment Quality and standards Student learning experience Student progression and outcomes Teaching and learning Assessment and achievement

  12. Who is involved in a Departmental Review? The Panel • 2 Faculty representatives from outwith the Department under review (including 1 Professor) • At least 2 assessors external to the University including 1 from outside Scotland • At least 1 members (but normally not more than 2) from another Faculty and, where relevant, 1 senior member of Professional Services • 1 student from another department within the Faculty

Who is involved in a Departmental Review? • Head of Department • Senior Management Team • Other staff as appropriate (e.g. research staff, postgraduate research students, course co-ordinators, teaching support staff, other support staff) • Postgraduate instructional students • Undergraduate students • International students

What is the Role of the Student Panel Member? • EXACTLY THE SAME AS ANY OTHER PANEL MEMBER! • A full member of the panel may: • Comment during discussions • Question participants & other panel members • Feed back into reports • Make recommendations • Discuss reflective analysis and experiences with participants in order to investigate the quality of the department

Before the meeting • Lots of reading! • Important to get a context of what the department is like and how it is operated • If you have any questions, you can clarify points with the Faculty Manager • Make some notes based on areas you would like to know more about or investigate further • Pre-review dinner

  17. During the meeting • Ask questions to participants (staff & students) • Comment on areas of concern or examples of good practice • Discuss your thoughts with other panel members • Make recommendations in certain areas • Build up general thoughts on important issues • You may be asked to Chair the student discussion section (over lunch)

After the meeting • Conclude on your final thoughts relating to the department • Have full input into the final report • The Dean of the Faculty and the Faculty Manager will produce the draft report findings • Panel members provide feedback, comments, alterations & additions to the draft before it is finalised • Get paid £400

And then… • What happens to the Report once it is complete • Faculty Committees as appropriate • What happens to issues raised in the report? • Departments required to provide a written response to the report within 6 months • Report and Response considered by Quality Monitoring Committee • Included in Annual Report to the SFC (Scottish Funding Council)

  21. Top Tips for Reviewers • Don’t be afraid to ask! (No-one expects you to know everything, so make sure you are clear on what is going on so that you can participate fully) • Remember you are a full member and can comment on any area of the Department • Speak from experience (in moderation) • Remember the ABCD of Effective Feedback…
