  1. TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY CONGRATULATIONS KUWAIT & SPERRY-SUN JEBEL ALIMOST NEAR-MISSES REPORTED TO DATE WHAT?! DEFENSIVE DRIVERS LIVE LONGER

  2. 7 non-recordable accidents in the Middle East in the last month These might be considered minor, but they tell us that we’ve lost concentration … we’re thinking of other things instead of staying safe. WATCH OUT! The iceberg rule tells us that if we don’t cut out the near misses, then we are building towards a disaster.

  3. 1 10 30 600 2000 THE ICEBERG RULE • for every 2000 unsafe acts • - overtaking in the hard shoulder • - speeding on a roundabout • - running a red light • - driving too close • you can expect • 600 near misses • 30 minor accidents • 10 major accidents • one disaster disaster / fatality major accident - injuries involved minor accident (nobody hurt, drove away) near misses unsafe act think it can't happen?

  4. fuel tank ignited and plane crashed 1 of those had punctured the fuel tank 4 tyres had burst on runways 84 ??? don’t know how many near misses or unsafe acts hadhappened ??? LOOK AT THE STATISTICS FOR CONCORDE BEFORE LAST YEAR’S CRASH THAT KILLED MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE ICEBERG RULE ... disaster / fatality 1 major accident - injuries involved 10 minor accident (towed away) 30 600 near misses 2000 unsafe act

  5. MORE NEAR MISSES - WHAT’S MAKING THE DIFFERENCE TO OUR SAFETY FOCUS AT THE MOMENT? It’s summertime. It’s hot. We’re fatigued and tired. And so are the other drivers. Lots of people are on vacation - perhaps our supervisor isn’t there to remind us to stay safe, or keep us focused. There are fewer people to talk to and fewer people to watch out for us. We’re thinking about our own vacation - worrying about flights and families. We’re distracted.

  6. WARNING! ROAD IS USED BY CRAZY DRIVERS WHAT CAN WE DO? Be good to ourselves … drive defensively Avoid driving at risky times (just after lunch, or when we’re tired, or late at night). Avoid bad drivers - move aside and let the danger pass you by. Keep scanning the road for potential hazards - burst tyres, things falling off lorries. If you’re a passenger, pay attention and help the driver stay alert. Don’t take risks.

  7. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DRIVING? If you have one unsafe driving act each day - it takes five years for you to have completed the bottom of your iceberg DEFENSIVE DRIVERS LIVE LONGER
