SPPI : A NEW DIRECTION • Promote planning excellence in Saskatchewan through ensuring planning is seen as an essential service for organizations. • Provide professional development opportunities to all members across the spectrum. • Represent the planning profession in policy issues which have the potential to affect the profession. • Strengthened tie to CIP initiatives. • Enhanced communication both internally and externally • Effective implementation and administration of legislation and policies. • Revenues support strategic and operational initiatives. • Facilitate the progress of the majority of candidate members to become RPP’s

  8. WHY IS PLANNING SO IMPORTANT NOW?

Saskatchewan is currently ranked among the top two provinces for: • Non-residential investment • Urban housing starts • International exports • Manufacturing shipments • Retail sales • Unemployment rates and rates of employment growth • Average weekly earnings • Real wage growth; and • Saskatchewan's population reached an all-time record of 1.1M at the end of 2012, the largest year-over-year increase in the province's 107-year history.

GROWTH IS EVIDENT ACROSS SASK • New storage Facilities in Air Ronge • New local restaurants in Avonlea and Coronach • New seed warehouse in Avonlea • A community lottery in Biggar raises $63K to invest back into local communities • Hudson Bay re-opens the Weyerhaeuser OSB mill, recalling nearly all of the 140 employees • Big Muddy Badlands in southern Sask hits Reader's Digest Top 10 List of places to see in Canada • Estevan is teaming up nine municipalities to investigate the possibility of a new water system

PLANNING IS GAINING MOMENTUM Many of Saskatchewan’s 786 rural and urban municipalities have been under pressure to respond to growth demands, spurring: • 158 municipalities to participate in the province’s Planning for Growth program • the development of 18 planning districts involving 88 municipalities and two First Nations across the province • an increase in the number of Official community plans (40% of municipalities); and Zoning bylaws (63% of municipalities) • A growing interest in establishing planning and development services to support local and regional demands for residential and commercial lots, expanding infrastructure, and servicing
