APHG – Day 7 (A Day)

This learning objective explores major geographic concepts and how they illustrate spatial relationships, covering sustainability, mapping, and the three pillars of sustainability. Also, it discusses the concept of Koppen's climates, changing environments, and the influence of human geography on ecology. Additionally, it delves into the cultural ecology and the concept of UTC.

  1. APHG – Day 7 (A Day) Learning Objective PSO-1.B: Explain how major geographic concepts illustrate spatial relationships. To Get: • Quiz 1.4 • 3 Ring Binder • Notes and Definitions To Do: • Quiz 1.4 (last one for about 2 weeks!) • Sustainability Lecture • Article and Video Examples – Three Pillars of Sustainability • Introduce Mapping Project (remember your country?) Homework – Mapping Project

  2. Sustainability and Resources Three Pillars • Environment – conservation vs. preservation • Economic – resources are only valuable through marketplace exchange • A piece of gold was just a rock until society gave it value… • Social – human needs related to shelter, food, clothing • Meat versus vegetarian diet • energy efficient housing • Clothing that needs to be washed less/natural fibers • BrundtlandReport argued sustainability can only be achieved by bringing together environmental protection, economic growth, and social equality.

  3. Environment Pillar: Conservation vs. PreservationUnsustainable Ecosystem: Cape Town, South Africa https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2018/02/cape-town-running-out-of-water-drought-taps-shutoff-other-cities/

  4. Economic Pillar:Marketplace Exchange • When did oil become valuable? • https://study.com/academy/lesson/middle-east-oil-history-production.html

  5. Social Pillar – Wash clothing less or buy used… Washless Clothing • https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/7/15/20686239/clothing-wash-less-environment Microfibers from clothing: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrgNAuBPqYU • Patagonia Wornwear: • https://wornwear.patagonia.com/ • REI: • https://www.rei.com/used

  6. Earth Systems Atmosphere • Climate – Koppen’s climates Biosphere • Flora and Fauna –dictated early settlement areas Lithosphere • Soil – Geographers concerned with soil erosion (overplanting) • Landforms - geomorphology Hydrosphere • Water in liquid form, 97% is found in the world’s oceans

  7. Koppen’s Climates

  8. Changing the Environment • People are not supposed to live where it is too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry. • Ecumene – belief that people should only live in the part of Earth that is naturally habitable. • Are we manipulating the environment too much? • Write one well-developed paragraph, to share with the class, about one of the areas listed below and how and why someone would choose to live there. • Las Vegas, Southern Florida, Alaska, or Siberia

  9. Possiblism to the EXTREME!

  10. Burj Tower • 2,717 ft.

  11. Ski Dubai! Want to go skiing in the desert? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIX9ju_ZbAY • Opened in November 2005, the indoor resort features an 85-metre-high indoor mountain (equivalent to a 25-story building) with 5 slopes of varying steepness and difficulty, including a 400-metre-long run, the world's first indoor black diamond run, and various features (boxes, rails, kickers) that are changed on a regular basis. A quad lift and a tow lift carry skiers and snowboarders up the mountain. Equipment such as skis and jackets are provided with the ticket and one can buy equipment in the nearby stores. Adjoining the slopes is a 3,000-square-metre Snow Park play area comprising sled and toboggan runs, an icy body slide, climbing towers, giant snowballs and an ice cave. Ski Dubai also houses a number of penguins who are let out of their enclosures several times a day. Penguin encounters can be booked, allowing the public to interact directly with the penguins. wikipedia

  12. How did Dubai get so rich? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EctE3dEAwEY • Search for local connections: “prince of Dubai horse farm ky”

  13. Geography and Ecology • Regions: Areas of unique characteristics contd. • Cultural ecology- the geographic study of human-environment relationships. • Contemporary cultural ecology rejects environmental determinism and embraces possibilism which states that the physical environment may limit some human actions, but people have the ability to adjust their environment. • Humans view their environment as a collection of resources and can choose a course of action from many alternatives in the environment. • Important physical processes that help human geographers understand the distribution of human activities are climate, vegetation, soil, and landforms.

  14. UTC – Coordinated Universal Time • Needed due to space-time compression and globalized business. • “We will meet at 3pm UTC.” • Easier to organize conference calls if people are joining from multiple time zones. • This…, sort of… • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmeBMvGhf1g

  15. Modify Pacing Guide! • You will have one work day in class to continue or finish your Mapping Project. • I would suggest getting started this weekend and then using in-class time to revise, ask for help, editing, etc. • All Days will be bumped down, meaning that we will have Exam #1 on Wednesday, 9/18 instead.

  16. Unit 1 Project: Map Analysis Essay • Find a map, of the country you chose, in a newspaper, magazine, the internet, or other source. You will need to turn this in with your essay so make sure you can print it or tear it out of the print publication. • Examine the map carefully and think about the choices the cartographer made. You must consider the map’s projection, colors, symbols, data classification, scale, and overall design. (what is the purpose of this map?) • In a five-paragraph essay evaluate the map’s usefulness; stressing both advantages and limitations. (does it achieve it’s intended purpose?) • Give a short presentation of the map wherein you summarize your thoughts and findings using terms and concepts from the text whenever possible.

  17. Mapping • Take out your mapping packet and turn to North/Central America and Caribbean. • Fill in for each country. • Material Check
