  1. BlueSky Performance Evaluation 2014: co-op projectDavid LyderAlberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, Government of Alberta(David.Lyder@gov.ab.ca)BlueSky Team Meeting, February 18 – 20, 2014

  2. Objectives The objective of the 2014 program is threefold: • Give student an opportunity to work with real data from a complex problem • Evaluate BlueSky performance for 2013 • Learn about context of BlueSky from a policy perspective

  3. Student Data is complex: • Ambient data: • Point data • Variable/changing monitor technology • Incomplete data sets • BlueSky Data: • Gridded data • Multiple/overlapping runs • Alternate emission/physics models

  4. Student • Opportunity for student to learn how to handle real data sets: • Statistics: parametric and non-parametric, categorical • Scripting in Verdi, Excel to handle large data sets • Opportunity for student to learn about complex problem: • Mesoscale-meteorology • Atmospheric transport • Problem needs to be well defined! • Short project (8-month) • Limited experience (undergraduate)

  5. BlueSky • Continue with Kalman filter analysis: • Test for different forecast periods • Generalize to current modelling results • Weighting • Fourier/wavelet analysis: • Examination of problem in Fourier space may be easier • Determine characteristics of stationary/non-stationary • sources • Neural Net • Non-linear • Related to other data (CO, PM10)?

  6. Policy • Multi-stakeholder process: • Learn about how GOA works with other groups • Inside GOA • Outside of GOA • Dissemination of knowledge: • Need to inform stakeholders • Oral reports • Written reports • Formulating and adopting policy: • What? When? How?
