How it makes work easier: It is used to help things move up or down distances

Examples: Ramps, stairs, slide, escalator, slope

Wedge

Wedge

Definition: An object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, 2 inclined planes put together

How it helps make work easier: Cuts or spreads an object apart or fastens objects

Examples: Doorstop, axe, thumbtack, knife, snowplow, chisel

Screw

Screw

Definition: An inclined plane wrapped around a pole/cylinder

How it makes work easier: Holds things together or lifts things

Examples: Screw, propeller, fan, jar lid, drill

Wheel and axle

Wheel and Axle

Definition: A wheel with a rod through its center, both parts move together

How it makes work easier: Lifts or moves loads across distances

Examples: Wagon wheel, doorknob, car, bike

Pulley

Pulley

Definition: Cable or rope wrapped around a grooved wheel. As the wheel rotates, the cord moves

How it makes work easier: Helps lift things up and down or move them across

Examples: Flagpole, clothesline, tow truck, crane

Lever

Lever

Definition – A stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum. It pivots (turns) against the fulcrum. There are 3 types, and the type is determined by where the fulcrum is. The types are 1st class, 2nd class, and 3rd class.

How it makes work easier: It lifts and moves loads.

1 st class

1st class

Examples: seesaw, scissors, crowbar

2 nd class lever

2nd class lever

Examples: wheelbarrow, nutcracker
