  2. Overview • Auto-DR in C&I – 4 years of pilots • PG&E, SDG&E, SCE • 2.5 MW shed in heat storm ’06 (11 times) • CPUC requesting (?) 250 MW Auto-DR in ’07 • PG&E 100 MW • SCE 100 MW • SDG&E 50 MW

Auto-DR System Description • Utility dispatches DR “events” (CPP, DBP, RTP, ancillary services etc.) • LBNL “DR Automation Server” (DRAS) provides: • Automated shed (human out-of-the-loop) • Opt-out • Time buffering • Interface to sites • Software clients to “advanced” sites • Hardware “Client & Logic with Integrated Relay” (CLIR Box) for all others

  4. Distributed Control for Demand Response • All facilities were in California • Auto-DR infrastructure nationwide

  5. Auto-DR System: Communications • ISO or Utility defines price or mode • Price/mode published on Automation Server • Sites automatically check price/mode every minute & send shed commands • EMCS carries out shed

  6. DRAS Technology • High Availability (heartbeats, 99.99+%) • Scalable • Secure • Extensible • J2EE/JBoss/MySQL • Co-Lo Hosted

  7. Case Study - Auto-DR tests were conducted at 18 sites in 2003 & 2004 Including: Albertsons – Supermarket, Oakland BofA – Bank Office Building, Concord GSA – Gov’t Office Building, Oakland UCSB – College Campus Library, SB Echelon – Office Building, San Jose
