Adverbs. Adverbs. Like adjectives, describe other words or make other words more specific. An Adverb is a word that modifies a verb , an adjective , or another adverb. Adverb Modifying a Verb. Answers any of the following ?’s Where? When? In what way? To what extent?.

  2. Adverbs • Like adjectives, describe other words or make other words more specific. An Adverb is a word that modifiesa verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

  3. Adverb Modifying a Verb • Answers any of the following ?’s • Where? • When? • In what way? • To what extent?

  4. Adv. Modifying an Adj. or another Adv. • Answers only one question: • To what extent?

  5. Position of Word • Varies within a sentence • If modifying a verb, it may precede or follow it or even interrupt a verb phrase. • Normally, adverbs modifying adjectives or other adverbs will immediately precede (come before) the words they modify.

  6. Compound Verbs as Adverbs The tractor backed upalongside the field. Please point out which band instrument is yours. Jennifer had to run out at lunch to pick up her car.

  7. Nouns functioning as Adverbs • Several nouns can function as adverbs that answer the questions Where? Or When? • Some of the words: home, yesterday, today, tomorrow, mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights, week, month, and year.

  8. Adverb or Adjective? • Many adverbs are formed by the addition of –lyto an adjective.

  9. Adverb or Adjective?

  10. But wait… • Some adjectives, however, also end in –ly. • Therefore, you cannot assume that every word ending in –ly is an adverb.

  11. For example • an ugly scene • a nightly bloom • a lovely shell • curly edges

  12. Remember!! • Determine the part of speech by checking their function in the sentence. ADVERBS – MODIFY A VERB, ADJECTIVE, OR ADVERB. ADJECTIVES - MODIFY A NOUN OR PRONOUN.

  13. Practice • The concert ran late. • We enjoyed the late dinners in Spain. • The fish swam straight through the channel. • The path was straight.
