  2. Review • Do you remember what an adjective is?

  3. Adjectives • Adjectives describe nouns. • He was joyful.

  4. Is this an adjective? • He jumped joyfully.

  5. Adverbs • Adverbs—which usually end in ly--describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. • Adverbs can designate how, when, or where an action occurs.

  6. Adverbs • Adverbs are words that modify: • Verbs: He drove slowly—How did he drive? • Adjectives: He drove a very fast car—How fast was his car? • Adverbs: She moved quite slowly down the aisle—How slowly did she move?

  7. Ly words • Not all words that end in –ly are adverbs. • For instance: lovely, lonely, friendly, motherly, neighborly---are all adjectives. • Not all adverbs end in –ly. • Well, there, very, so and almost are all adverbs

  8. Practice • Supply adverbs • The dog _________ ran to the burglar and _________ bit him. • The plane ________ took off. • My sister _______ announced that the party would be delayed.

  9. Identify the adverbs • The extremely small boy climbed the rope very quickly. • The chef carefully spread raspberry frosting over the cake. • The robber stood there. • The lamp shines very brightly.

  10. Problems with adverbs • She did good on her test. • She did well on her test.

  11. “If different was supposed to modify the verb think, it should be an adverb, as in think differently. But Jobs insisted that he wanted different to be used as a noun, as in think victory or think beauty…It’s grammatical, if you think about what we’re trying to say. Practice: correct any mistakes in the use of adverbs • The band’s live performances are real exciting. • Turn the corner quick and drive up the ramp. • Allison made a really beautiful collage of her friends’ pictures. • This truck doesn’t run so good in cold weather. • Remember this cell phone number well; you may need it. • Leon sang the passage a little too slow for my taste. • The facial details made the picture look real authentic.
