  1. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… • Cover 1/5 earth’s surface • Found on EVERY continent and in all oceans • Formed by: • -the constant but very slow movement of the • Earth’s plates . • -Travel 1 to 4 inches per year. • - Plates collide = crust folds into high mountainous ranges. • Five ways that mountains are formed : • Volcanic Activity • Folding 4. Erosion • Faulting 5. Dome building

  2. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… • = Involves the extrusion(forcing out) of rock tends • (lava) to form mountains or features like • mountains over large amount of time. • Examples = A 680 mile long fault running 50 miles off the • west- coast of the USA, from the Pacific Northwest off • Northern California to Vancouver Islands & • British Columbia. • Faulting, Folding & Dome Building • Folding = Earth’s plates are pushed together in a roller-coaster like series of • high points and low points. Bends many layers of rocks without • breaking them. • Examples = Appalachian Mts. & Rocky Mts. • Faulting = The earth’s crust move vertically upward at fault lines by • pressures caused plates colliding . Fault lines are • great cracks in the crust. • Examples = Sierra Nevada Mts. In California & Nevada/grand • Teton range in Wyoming . Volcanic Activity

  3. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… • Dome Building = Low Mountains that were formed when the crust was • heaved upward without folding or faulting into a • round dome. The mountains are much higher in • elevation than the surrounding land and because of • this erosion occurs at a very fast rate. • Examples = Black Hills of South Dakota & Wyoming & Adirondack • Mts. of New York State. • Erosion = the gradual destruction of something, eroding by wind, water, • or natural agents. • Weathering & Erosion • Example = Our very own Old Man of the Mountain!!!

  4. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… Mrs. J & her best friend in 7th grade on their first hiking trip! I can not believe my future 6th grade students will see this embarrassing picture of me! Hiking kills the hair do!

  5. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance…

  6. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… • Cover ____ earth’s _______ • Found on EVERY __________ and in all ________ • Formed by: • -the ________ but very ____ movement of the • Earth’s __________ • -Travel _________ inches per year. • - Plates _______ = crust ______ into high mountainous • ranges. • Five ______ that mountains are________: • ___________ Activity • ___________ 4. _________________ • ___________ 5. ___________ 1/5 surface Continent ocean constant slow plates 1 to 4 collide folds ways formed Volcanic Folding Dome Building Faulting Erosion

  7. Mountains!!! Of New York State. • Erosion = the gradual destruction of something, eroding by _____________, • or natural agents. • Example = Our very own Old Man of the Mountain!!! • Weathering & Erosion Low upward higher erosion Black Hills Adirondack water, wind

  9. Everest • Nepal, China • Highest in the world Mountains!!! • Pakistan • 2nd Highest in the world • K2 And all their brilliance… • Alaska, U.S.A. • Highest in the U.S.A. • Old Man of the Mt • New Hampshire Landmark • Not very high anymore • McKinley

  10. Mountain • Hills • Mountain Ranges • Plain • A landform with high elevation and a pointed or round top; higher than a hill • A broad and flat or gently rolling area usually low in elevation. • Raised parts of the earth’s surface, with sloping sides; smaller than mountains. • A row of connected mountains. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… Mountain Vocabulary • Plateau • A broad and flat or gently rolling area high above sea level.

  11. Mountains!!! And all their brilliance… High Mountains Highest Part And Higher Higher Up Foothills
