  7. 3.      Critical Points to note Before Getting an Offer •  3.1    The job market is very stringent and competition is fierce. Do not expect high pay and comfortable jobs. Many organizations, including Government departments, look for keen helpers but not leisure players. • 3.2    We are competing with other universities for training places. In addition to showing our abilities, we have to show commitment and dedication.

  8. 4.      Critical Points to note Before and After Signing an Agreement with a Company • 4.1    Always remember that you are a delegate of the University of Hong Kong. You have the duty to uphold the reputation of the University. Do everything possible to maintain the good relationship between the University and external parties. • 4.2    You must stick to the agreement once it is signed. Report for duty punctually, work with commitment, and stay until the last day of the pre-agreed training period. • 4.3    After you have signed an agreement with a Company, you should not engage with another company for such reasons as higher pay, better working hours, more convenient location, etc.

  9. 4.      Critical Points to note Before and After Signing an Agreement with a Company • 4.4    You should not resign and leave the Company for any of the following excuses: • A. To work with a professor/lecturer at the University; • B. To prepare for the final year project; • C. To prepare for the supplementary examination; • D. To settle family/private affairs; • E. Any other unjustifiable reasons.

  10. 5.      Work Ethics • 5.1    SAFETY FIRST! Avoid doing harm to yourself and others while performing your duty. If in doubt, ask your supervisor. • 5.2    Observe the Company regulations. Show respect for the Company, your seniors and fellow workers.

  11. 6.      Assessment • 6.1    The Company will be invited to evaluate your performance towards the end of the training session. • 6.2    You have to submit a Training Report by on or before 10 Sept 2010 (Friday) after the summer training period to the EEE Department Office • Deadline for report submission: 10 Sept 2010 (Friday) • Submit to: 6/F Chow Yei Ching Building) Office hours: 9:00 – 12:30 and 14:00 – 17:00. • 6.3    Late submission of Training Report will not be accepted after the deadline and you will FAIL the course. You may have to repeat the practice training and submit training report again in order to get a pass. • 6.4    The reports duly marked will be available for collection by the students in December. Uncollected reports will be discarded after 1 June of the following year.

  12. 7.      Report Writing •  7.1    The Training Report shall cover the following areas: • History, background and main business of the Company • Organizational structure of the department with which you have worked • Schedule of work undertaken by you • Description of work that you have completed and experience gained • Your comments on the work done • How did you build human relations with your seniors and co-workers • General remarks on the Industrial Training • Appendix (if any) • 7.2    The report shall be typed on A4 paper, doubled sided with proper margins. • 7.3    The text of the report, i.e. the words written by you for this purpose, should be limited to 2500 words (plus/minus 10%). 21. Summer Internships in FranceEPFL – A polytechnic University in France • More information: • http://ic.epfl.ch/SummerAtEpfl • http://ic.epfl.ch/page68132.html • The School of Computer and Communication Sciences provides internship opportunities in the Summer period for students enrolled in BSc, MSc, or equivalent programmes in Computer Science or Engineering, Telecommunications, or Electrical Engineering. Internships are assigned competitively to students with excellent academic results. • During a period of at least two months and including the whole month of August, internship students get the chance to learn new skills and to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field while working personally with leading senior scientists. • Participating students will work in a research unit, typically to solve problems which are usually part of major research efforts. Often, this will lead to performing challenging programming or design tasks to prove new concepts. • Being an intern at EPFL is a highly motivating learning and working experience in a competitive research environment, but it is also a great way to get familiar with another culture, to start building a network of connections in Switzerland, and to get prepared for a global career!
