  1. EAME SEMINAR SESTRIEREAPRIL 2006SPEED CONTROLfeaturing PERFECT PASS

  2. And now we know !! • Yes we are even more wiser with the system now and over the years have gained enough knowledge to be comfortable with the system. • It seems the system is now nearer PERFECT!

  3. Prestigous AWARD • PERFECT PASS have been presented the “Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Technology”

  4. 10th Anniversary Congratulations!! • First official international use was Junior Worlds in Edmonton CANADA…………..since then it………….. • Has been developed to a very high usable standard and is readily accepted as the Worlds most used system by boat companies, competition organisers and skiers. • It has proven extremely reliable • It is very accurate in its operation……rpm reading and has achieved magnificent results

  5. LATEST VERSION • Version 6.5NG - Ability to add names (8) • New Display –more info on 1 screen • No Changes in Slalom except for button operation ( more user friendly) eventually!! • In Jump X8u & X8d important setting (skier can change)

  6. NEW SCREEN Slalom

  7. NEW SCREEN Jump

  8. NEW SCREEN Tricks

  9. Tuning PP System to Boat • No two boats are identical in performance. (engine variables, propeller variables, hull variables etc. • The same boat will not perform exactly the same on different lakes.( water type, water depth, etc) There will be slight differences in performance just like skis will feel different on certain lakes. (In the past good old days Drivers used to compensate for all of these characteristics in Real Time)

  10. POINT OF NOTE • FUEL OCTANE was found to be important in set up of parameters……..also propane! • The lower the octane the lower the power output from the engine. (engine runs retarded) • This affects the feel of the boat to the skier which relates to KX,PX, X8u in particular.

  11. Tuning PP System to Boatthe parameters we have are…… • In Slalom……… KX and PX, SSB, RPM Offset. The G% is still a fixed parameter • In Jump……….. X8u and X8d, S2%, RPM, S2 fine • Propeller change for certain boats has been needed. (Like changing a gear on a bicycle) can achieve the same speed in a different way.

  12. Lets talk about the “TL” or the.. • X8u… is the setting that controls the way in which the boat accelerates when the jump switch is activated. • Ideally this is set that the boats max power coincides with the pull TO and THROUGH the Jump Ramp not too strong at the turn to the ramp. • In an ideal world all boat speeds should have different propellors especially at top level in order that the engine is working at its highest power torque range at any speed

  13. X8u Settings • Settings may differ from Men and Women because of Speed differences and Strength differences…….also Juniors may require different settings. • It makes a big difference to the X8U where the boat is positioned ie Wide, Split, Narrow which means the Jumper is either pulling longer or shorter. • There are recommended values but these are a guide based on, Engine size, Wind Direction, Water, Fuel, Crew, Hull, etc

  14. X8u Settings Guide • Strong Boat - 1600 • Weak Boat - 250 • Higher the number the softer the start • Lower the number the harder the start • The boat must accelerate all the way through the jump ( listen while testing during practice)

  15. X8u Overide • Some systems have this setting be aware that the handle is not pushed during the skiers performance. • Not all systems have this.

  16. From the Boat Judge Seat /Driver Judging • NO CHANGES in system operation • Judges secondary display was MANDATORY in 2005 to see the All Buoy Times NOW ……….all times on 1 screen • System Operation Checking • Boat Path Checking New Rules • General Driving Techniques (shortening etc)

  17. From the Boat Judges seat • Don’t be afraid to ask questions when system is being adjusted it will help you understand the logic or otherwise. • Comment on the Boat Path Good or Bad it is very important for all concerned.( in an extremely nice way) • Drivers… regarding judging decisions… only speak when you are spoken to…unless it involves driving or speed control functionality. • Drivers…Keep a mindful eye on rope shortenings as a security check to help the Boat Judge. It is a joint effort in the boat.

  18. The need to inform Driver of Times • Times are to be actual…. • Comment on Trends …. Ask for Reasons • Usually find Actual to Middle Slow is the style most drivers tend to drive as their trend. • DRIVING TOLERANCE ????????? Should there be? Yes! as a target but keep the skiers tolerance as normal.( for what the tolerance is designed for)

  19. TIMES DISPLAYED

  20. Reminder in Slalom • KX - Can only be adjusted once by skier • PX - No Changes Permitted once chosen by Skier • SSB - In General a Global Setting (unless conditions change)

  21. End Course (rule 14.14) • The boat Judge shall observe the boat path. If any part of the boat deviates outside the bounds of the boat gates, the boat judge shall award an optional reride if the path of deviation was a disadvantage to the skier. If it was to the skier's advantage, a reride is mandatory. • It is recommended that the end course video be monitored from the judges tower and any driving corrections needed communicated to the driver. (2006) • The Chief Judge may assign an end-course judge to monitor the end-course video and award rerides on the following criteria:If the center of the boat deviates more than 20cm from the center of the course, the end-course judge shall award an optional reride if the path of deviation was a disadvantage to the skier. If it was to the skier's advantage, a reride is mandatory. If it had no effect, a reride will not be awarded. It shall be considered an advantage if the boat deviates outside the 20cm toward the buoy that the skier is attempting to get around thus making it easier for him to get to the buoy. It shall be considered a disadvantage if the boat deviates outside the 20cm away from the buoy that the skier is attempting to get around thus making it harder for him to get to the buoy. It shall be considered no effect if the deviation happened in a part of the pass where the skier was not in the process of attempting to round a buoy. The reride will be awarded if the end-course judge and the Chief Judge agree on the determination. The skier's score up to the point of the illegal deviation shall be protected assuming all other rules criteria have been met (time).(2006)

  22. Notes- re End Course Judging • Very Good idea to monitor this BUT • How can it be decided what boat path is an advantage or disadvantage at any part of the performance? • Should it be clear either in or out of tolerance. • If all competitions don’t adopt this then is this not unfair worldwide and affects ranking lists

  23. System Pre Trigger • Inform Judge as soon as it occurs and inform skier as soon as SAFELY possible and take appropriate action.

  24. JUMP DRIVING • Times should be Actual • More difficult due to different styles of skiers and Boat Path positions ( split, narrow split, wide split) • RPM Adjust, S2%, S2 Fine, Changeable Parameters. • X8u and X8d Fixed for boat (Men & Women settings also Boys & Girls) ????

  25. So you want a re-ride free Tournament • The Course & Magnets are the foundation of the whole event so if these are not installed and set correctly then problems will occur. • Magnet strengths can be tested by the system ----- very important. • Also check Smart Timers for their efficiency by going the same direction either side of the magnets after the magnet test is complete

  26. Smart Timers • SMART TIMERS should be set level with the Ski Pole in line with each other. This is the datum point where all system operation is achieved. • This give uniformity in both directions • If not in correct position then gate setup in Slalom is affected and times are affected relative to the skiers performance

  27. Check ABT accurately during testing • Make sure All Buoy times have the same tolerance level in each segment. If there is a differential then check why. • Some reasons:- Course tolerance, moving magnet, less powerful magnet due to depth position, metal interference, faulty Smart Timer. • Mobile Phones off in Boat just in case.

  28. What if ? • You are running the Ladies Slalom Final. • All times at all segments have been perfect all event. • Last Skier falls at Buoy 4 (Scoring 31/2) the time shown on the system (3) is slow the ABT at 1 and 2 is absolutely perfect and at no 4 the time is slightly fast of middle tolerance there has been no noticeable change in engine sound all seems normal. • What should be the result?

  29. Is there a case for…… • A referee style decision based on the facts from the boat judge/driver/information gathered ? • Re - ride with ability to improve on a questionable slow time? • Install back up timing independent of the system as a definite monitoring aid to times.

  30. Any Questions • Perfect Pass have a very good website that will answer all of your questions with regard to the system. • The site allows access to all aspects of the system and is well worth a visit. • www.perfectpass.com

  31. The Future • New Screens are here • A Drive by Wire has been developed • Ship to Shore is still being worked on, utilising the best radio system is the key.
