Characteristics Defined. . . • Common Goals: in effective groups a shared interest benefit or goal is present • Role Perception: in successful settings each member plays a variety of roles – some are outside of their own perception of what they think their role should be • Longevity: short term focuses more on the tack rather than maintenance; long tern will focus on maintenance such as on going duties and scheduling

Characteristics Defined. . . • Size: The smaller the group the more communication there is • Status: some group members will seem better qualified in specific areas – use those strengths • Group norms: the standard or average behavior of group • Leadership: leadership is the most important factor that determines the groups performance – they establish norms, provide direction and motivation

Stages Defined. . . • Forming: becoming acquainted with each other and the task • Storming: dealing with conflicting personalities • Norming: developing strategies and activities that promote goal achievement • Performing: reaching a balance in the group that allows the group to function and accomplish the task with minimal conflict

Negative Group Roles. . . • Isolate – physically present, no participation • Dominator – speaks too often too long • Free rider – does not do fair share of work • Detractor – constantly criticizes and complains • Digresser – deviates from purpose • Airhead – never prepared • Socializer – pursues only the social aspect

Positive Group Roles. . . • Facilitator – makes sure everyone gets to talk and gets heard • Harmonizer – keeps tensions low • Record Keeper – maintains records and informs group members • Reporter – assumes responsibility for preparing materials for submission • Leader – assumes a directive role

  16. Meeting Management Meetings are essential for communication with in organizations. They present opportunities for employees or group members to acquire and evaluate valuable information. • Face to Face meetings - most used type of meeting format even in an electronic driven world. Have richest non verbal cues, and are particularly good when members don’t know each other well. • Electronic Meetings – becoming more popular with technology growth, minimizes costs i.e travel, and accommodate geographically diverse groups quickly and easily. Limitations can occur with technology available, skill levels with the technology, hardware failures, and bandwidth limitations.
