Character Development vs Resume Development Character Development – Giving shape/form to characters (individual) by adding substance and details making them unique and individually identifiable Resume – collection of an individual skills and experiences which make him/her unique and individually identifiable

Resume Prep Self Assessment How to add substance and details with skills and experiences • Basic Skill Sets (things you can do well and have experience doing) • Transferable Skills (skills developed in school or other positions) • Personal Attributes/Characteristics (qualities that are developed over a period of time) • Computer Skills (Software, hardware, and certifications) • Summary of skills sets, attributes and computer skills

Basic Skill Sets • Use computer and Internet to find information • Identify relevant details and facts when reading • Record information completely and accurately • Use computers to communicate information • Create documents, including letters, manuals, reports and graphs • Use numbers and information to solve practical problems • Organize ideas and communicate messages appropriately • Listen carefully to what a person says and response appropriately

It also includes Hard Disk Drive, Motherboard, Video Card, and Storage Devices Online Resources Internet, E-mails, and Social Media

  10. Types of Resumes Functional Forces on specific skills and omits dates and may not list specific jobs and employers. Chronological Standard resume format which list all your experience from present to past.

Your Chorological Resume Contact Information Name, Address, City, State, Zip Code – Phone and E-mail Education Name of School, Grade with Graduation Date, and Program of Study Relevant Education Course Work Courses/Honors taken relating to job, Dual Enrollment, GPA 3.0 or better Summary of Skills and Abilities Combination of Basic & Transferable Skills, Personal Attributes, and Computer Skills

  12. Summary of Skills and Abilities An organize hard worker capable of following directions, rules, and guidelines. Team player with an eye for detail. Self starter who gets the work done with little to no instructions. Knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Internet savvy and knowledge of social media.

Dos and Don’ts for Writing Resume • Don’t copy a job description, word for word, from an on-line source • DO NOT use personal pronouns (I or Me) • Do keep the length to 1 or 2 pages (don’t include the reference page) • Do use short action word phrases with bullet points • Do make it look good • Font – Times New Roman, Arial and Tahoma • Font size - 10-12 points • Highlight section headers with boldface • Be consistent use single spacing for statements and double between sections

Cover Letter and E-mail Etiquette Resume Attached to Cover Letter • Why are you writing, information about you, and your interest in the position • Keep it simple and don’t repeat everything that is already on the resume • Use an informative signature to include: Name and contact information “If you have questions or need more information, you may reach me through the phone number or email below. “ E-mail Etiquette • Include a meaningful subject line: Summer Internship Opportunity • Begin with a salutation, or greeting: Dear Ms. or Mr. Jones • Use standard spelling, punctuation, and capitalization – ALL CAP is a No, No • Do not any use emotion icons -  • End with Thank you

Interview Preparation • The interview starts when you apply for the position • Critique your phone message & your social media site(s) • Research the company • Develop a 30 second commercial (Tell me about yourself) • 2 types of interview questions: Situational and Question/Answer • Tell Me A Story/Body Language • Prepare, Practice, and Review Interview questions • Prepare questions about the job or company to ask interviewer • Bring a Reference sheet along with a copy of resume (no friends or family members) • Thank the Interview and email a simple “Thank You Note”

Closing the Deal • Formal handshake • Manners (please and thank you) • Eye contact • Wait to be invited to have a seat • Bring only the bare essentials • Turn cell phone off - not vibrate - OFF • Do your research on the company • Ask inquiring questions • Be prepared to complete an application (have documents available) • Have references available
