SEMI HIGH TECH UA High Tech Career Exploration Program Promoting Semiconductor Technology Education Teachers and guidance counselors gathered to focus on math, science and technology as an introduction to nanotechnology and other emerging technologies. It is set up to share ideas that teachers can use in the classroom to expose students to these emerging technologies.

  3. Location Hudson Valley Community College’s TEC-SMART (Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies) facility in Malta, NY features more than a dozen state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories to train the workforce in semiconductor manufacturing and green technologies, including photovoltaic, geothermal and wind energy.

  4. Students can earn a two year degree which will prepare them for high paying technician positions in high tech companies.

  5. THE MODULES

  6. (1) Microchips and Solar Chips Objective: Become familiar with the basics. Laid the groundwork for understanding how chips are manufactured. Start with a Silicon wafer, add multiple layers of different materials to create transistors and circuits. Microchips and Solar Chips both Manufactured using similar technology.

  8. (2) Quality Control Objective: Generating data. Understanding the implications of that data and what it means to a manufacturing process. Look for consistency, reproducibility and problems that cause deviations.

  10. (3) Coding Objective: Learn to code to create animations using a program called Scratch Activity: https://scratch.mit.edu/ Or try Hour of Code: https://code.org/learn Minecraft, Star Wars or Anna and Elsa

  11. (4) Logic Circuits Objective: Learn all about Binary code for computing. AND, OR, XOR, and NOT gates – how each operates in a circuit.

  12. Activity Human Calculator: A circuit designed to add in binary code was printed on a “twister” like sheet.   13. (5) Nanotechnology Importance of nanotechnology in today’s products. Sunscreen - nano sized particles of Aluminum Oxide Clothing and toothbrushes - nanoparticles of silver Activity: Examine consumer products that contain nanoparticles. Decide if you would use them.

  14. (6) Field Trip

  15. Detailed information about the entire manufacturing Process was provided. Level of detail can vary with level of visitors. Windows to the manufacturing Area allow real time Observation. Really interesting place to see – go visit yourself, bring the family and then plan a field trip for your students.
