  1. Philippians 3:1-14 “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal,

  2. Philippians 3:1-14 persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of

  3. Philippians 3:1-14 his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

  4. Verse 1: “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.” • “Rejoice in the Lord” – Salvation, pardon, grace, mercy, peace

  5. Verse 2: “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.” • “Beware of dogs” – In NT times, dogs were hated scavengers • “Evil workers” – Refers to teachers who are spreading destructive doctrines

  6. Verse 3: “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” • Aspects of True Circumcision: • Worshipping God in the Spirit – Their worship of God was prompted, directed, and enabled by the Holy Spirit • Rejoicing in Christ – They boasted and took pride in Christ • Placing no confidence in the flesh – They didn’t trust human attainments or religious accomplish

  7. Verse 4: “Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:” • “Any other man” – Paul’s religious opponent, the Judaizers

  8. Verses 5-6: “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.” • All these religious credentials did not merit a relationship with God

  9. Verse 7: “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.” • “Those I counted loss for Christ” – These credentials were actually a detriment and liability

  10. Verse 8: “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,” • “All things” – Human works and religious attainment • “That I may win Christ” – All the things I obtained in my religious life, I will give away for Christ

  11. Verse 9: “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” • “And be found in Him” – Paul renounced his credentials to have Christ • “The righteousness which is of God by faith” – God grants the sinner divine righteousness on the basis of his faith in Christ II Corinthians 5:21 – “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might have the righteousness of God in Him.”

  12. Verse 10: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” • Paul’s objectives in life: • To know Him • The power of His resurrection • The fellowship of His suffering II Timothy 3:12 – “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

  13. Verses 11-12: “If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.” • Paul is admitting that he had not yet obtained perfection but that he had made progress in his goal of Christlikeness (Sanctification) Philippians 2:13 – “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.”

  14. Verse 13: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,” • Paul refuses to let past guilt pull him down Matthew 6:34 – “Take therefore no thought for tomorrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

  15. Verse 14: “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” • We are all running a race – Finish it! • “The prize” – The fullness of blessing and reward in the age to come • We are called: • From sin to salvation (I Peter 2:9 – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people: that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”)

  16. Verse 14: “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” • We are called: • From sin to salvation • From death to life(John 5:24 – “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”)

  17. Verse 14: “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” • We are called: • From sin to salvation • From death to life • From stranger into God’s family(I John 3:1 – “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.”) • From wanderers to witnesses(John 20:21 – “As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”)

  18. Hebrews 12:1,2 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”
