Modeling with Disk Magic - IBM Storage System Modeling Tool

Disk Magic (DM) is a tool developed by Intellimagic in the Netherlands for modeling disk response times and utilizations of IBM and other storage systems with a certain host workload. It supports modeling of IBM i with storage systems and can be downloaded from the provided link.

  2. Disk Magic (DM) • The tool for modeling disk response times and utilizations of a Storage system with a certain host workload • Developed and maintained by Intellimagic in Netherlands • With input from IBM developments for storage and servers • Supports different IBM and other Storage systems and different servers • Standard tool for sizing and modelling IBM Storage systems • Supports modeling of IBM i with Storage systems since 2003 • Can be downloaded from the following link: https://w3-03.sso.ibm.com/sales/support/ShowDoc.wss?docid=Q947558L63209Z65&node=brands,B5000|doctype,S0&ftext=Disk%20magic&sort=date&showDetails=true&hitsize=50&offset=0&campaign=-&reloaded=true

  15. IBM i performance reports are not available The IO rate and workload pattern is known Manual iserting of data to DM

  16. Manual iserting of data to DM - continue • Insert the IO cahracteristics • Possibly change the default cache hits and seek percentage • Save the base and continue with modelling

  17. Modelling Storwize V7000 for IBM i • DM doesn’t support modelling of IBM i workload with Storwize • Model open systems workoad with the same characterisitcs as IBM i workload has • To observe the IBM i workoad characteristics insert the performance reports to DM • Model Storiwze for open systems workload with: • IO rate • percentage of reads/sec • Blocksize • Seek % • Read cache hits that are shown in DM for IBM i
