  1. IBM i with External Storage Systems AssuranceJana Jamsek, ATS, Europe

  2. Initial questions • Does IBM i run in Power system ? • Does IBM i run on Blade ? • Which Storage systems are proposed for IBM i ? • Examples: • DS8000 and SVC • XIV and SVC • DS3500 • Storwize

  3. IBM i in Power system – way of connecting Storage system • Is the proposed Storage system supported by IBM i in Power system ? • Example N-series is only supported with NFS • DS3500 support • With DS8000, or DS5000 • Which type of connected is proposed: native, VIOS vscsi, VIOS_NPIV ? • Will SVC be used between the storage and IBM i ? • With Storwize, SVC, XIV and DS4000 • Plan for VIOS vscsi

  4. The planned configuration • How many IBM i systems or LPARs ? • Will the storage be used by other systems too ? • Are Copy services planned for business continuity ? • If possible, obtain the picture of configuration, example: IBM i LPARs IBM i LPARs Metro Mirror

  5. IBM i in Power system – microcode and software levels • Check if the following levels are correct to support the planned storage on both produciton site and DR site : • Power hardware • Power HMC • Power Firmware • IBM i level for native connection • IBM i level for VIOS connection • VIOS level • Check if the Storage microcode level and features support IBM i levels on both produciton site and DR site • Note: on DR site server and Storage types and levels may differ from the production site • If VIOS_NPIV is used: Check the prerequizites for VIOS_NPIV

  6. Experienced cases: • DS5000 native connection failed to recognize IBM i LoadSource because the firmware of Power system was not on correct level • The stand-by IBM i LPAR on DR site failed to IPL from Metro Mirror targets because the original IBM i level was not high enough to be supported by Power hardware on DR site

  7. IBM i in Blade Center • Is the planned storage system supported in a particular Blade chassis ? • Connection with VIOS vscsi • Is the number of planned IBM i system supported by the Blade Center ? • Is the number of planned VIO servers supported in the BladeCenter • Are the following levels correct to support the storage system on both production and DR site ? • BladeCenter model • IBM i level • VIOS level

  8. Adapters • Are the planned adapters supported by the host hardware ? • Are the planned adapters supported by IBM i level ? • Are the planned adapters supported by the Storage system ? • If VIOS is used check if the adapters in VIOS are supported by Storage system • Natively connected storage with IOP-less adapters: • Maximum no of LUNs per port in single path • Maximum no of LUNs per 2 or more ports in Multipath • Number of LUNs with IOP based adapters

  9. Adapters • Possible LoadSource considerations (Multipath , size of LUNs) • Storage connected with VIOS vscsi • Maximum no of LUNs per vscsi adapter • In Blade check the number of adapters • Storage connected with VIOS_NPIV • Maximum no of LUNs per virtual FC adapter (1 ports is used) • Maximum no of LUNs per 2 or more FC adapters in Mutlipath • Maximal number of virtual FC adapters per port in physical adapter in VIOS • Restriction for by LPARs

  10. Multipath • With native connection: Check if the adapters for Multipath are located teh way to provide maximal resisliency • With VIOS connection: Check if two or more VIOS are planned for Multipath, each path through one VIOS • With Blade: Check if the BladeCenter supports multiple VIOS • With IOP-based adapters: • Considerations of LoadSource with Multipath • Multipath with 2 or more VIOS • Possibility of 2 VIOS (Blade) • Aadapters in VIOS

  11. Performance • Was Disk Magic used to model the external storage with IBM i LPARs ? • Were sizing guidelines followed ? • External storage model, cache • No od ranks, no of physical disk drives • No of LUNs • No of adapters in IBM i • No of adapters in exteranal storage • Resources in VIOS • If IASPs are used • Sizing for IASPs • If Copy services are used • Is the link bandwidth sufficient for MM of GM ?

  12. OS and other system data OS and other system data I5/OS cluster services IASP Copy IASP Copy IASP Copy FlashCopy DS8000 DS8000 Metro Mirror Solutions with Copy Services • Which Copy services are planned ? • (Point in time copy, remore mirroring) • Are Copy services planned on entire disk level or on IASP ? • If possible provide a picture of the planned solution, example:

  13. Copy services of IASP • Which management will be used ? • ACS, • PowerHA, • Customer or local services setup • Is the planned solution supported by the management tool and by the Storage ? • Example: limitations with PowerHA • Example: limitation of DS5000 connected with VIOS • Are the implementation skills available ? • Setup application in IASP • Implement copy services

  14. Copy services of entire disk space • Is the planned solution supported ? • Which management tools are planned ? • TPC-R • DSCLI scripts • Are the implementation skills available ?

  15. Planning Storage system for Copy services • Is sufficient Capacity planned ? • Are the licenses planned ? • Is sufficient bandwidth of the links planned ? • If Space efficient FlashCopy is used • Was sizing for capacity and performance done ?
