  1. Ellis Island Project Character Assignments

  2. Name • You must make up a name for yourself. • It must be a common name in the country you are from. • It cannot be a modern name • You might want to wait until after you complete research, to make up your name.

  3. Country • This will be assigned to you if you do not sign up. Only one country per class is allowed. • You must work with / travel with a family. • All girl groups must have a male chaperone. • Your family can share a last name • Only countries in Europe will be assigned

  4. Job • You must make this up • It must be a job that was around in the mid to late1800s • It must be a job that could have been done in your home country. • Female’s need to research what jobs would have been acceptable for women to have at that time in history.

  5. Marital Status • You decide if you are married, single, or widowed (wife/husband is deceased or passed away) • Warning to girls: If you arrive to Ellis Island single, without a male chaperone, you may be forced into marriage at Ellis Island!

  6. Religion • What is the majority religion in the country you are from? • You will be researching this at the library using the book and online sources.

  7. Wealth • Time to Roll Dice! • 1 member of the family will role dice • If you rolled a 1 ----- 5 You are POOR! • If you rolled a 6 You are WEALTHY!

  8. Health • Each person will role the dice • If you rolled a 1 --- 4 you are Healthy! • If you rolled a 5 or 6 you are Sick • Sick people need to roll again

  9. If you are Sick… • 1 = Eye problem • 2 = Lice • 3 = Measles • 4 = Typhoid • 5 = Diphtheria • 6 = Smallpox It will be your responsibility to research these diseases and act out your illness accordingly the day of Ellis Island.

  10. Political Beliefs • Each person will role the dice • If you rolled a 1 --- 4 you are Apathetic (no political beliefs) • If you rolled a 5 or 6 you are Communist! Research what it means to be a Communist.

  11. Troubles with the Law • Each person will role the dice • If you rolled a 1 --- 5 No Troubles • If you rolled a 6 you are a Criminal! You will need to come up with a crime that you were guilty of committing in your home country.

  12. Read and Write • Each person will role the dice • If you rolled a 1 --- 4 You are Illiterate which means you can’t Read and Write • If you rolled a 5 or 6 you can Read and Write just fine!

  13. Now… Passport Directions All of the information on your Character Card must also be in your passport.
