Allam Grant ID No.: DUE-0756921, EEC-1004623 Two-Lane On-Ramp With Ramp Meter Increasing Safety • Ramp meters are traffic devices used to control traffic entering freeway mainline • First ramp meter implemented in Ohio on I-74 in 2004 • Studying effectiveness of implementing meter on I-275 between Mosteller Road and Reed Hartmann Highway exits Network Model Determine whether one or two lane ramp meter installation is most effective • Data collection and processing using GPS device, traffic counter, and QTravel software • Calibration and validation of network model • One and Two lane ramp implementation simulation using VISSIM software • Analysis of simulation results • A significant impact on safety was observed following ramp meter implementation. In both cases, one lane and two lane ramps, installing ramp meters showed a significant decrease in speed variation, both within the merge and non-merge zones, and between these two areas. • While both scenarios, one lane and two lane, showed decrease in speed variation, two lane meter implementation showed a much larger impact than one lane, and it can be concluded that ramp meters show greater effectiveness when installed on two lane on-ramps.
