Opening remarks • National Disability Survey was conducted as a follow-up to the 2006 Census of Population using responses to a self-completed census disability question (Q15) to select sample • First results will be published on 30 June based on around 15,000 private household returns and 650 institution returns

EU SILC 2006 Asked of respondents 16 years or over • Do you suffer from any chronic (long-standing) illness or condition (health problem)? 25.4% • For at least the last 6 months have you been limited in activities people usually do, because of a health problem? (If limited, specify whether strongly limited or limited). 19.4%

National Disability Survey • Measure severity and impact of disability on persons reporting a disability in the Census • Examine levels of and barriers to participation • Examine relationships between Census and NDS disability domains • Provide data to support policy and service provision • Exploration of Census No disability responses

NDS contd. • Conducted by face-to-face interviews • Private households and institutions • Adults and children (0-17) • Sample was predominantly of persons who reported a disability in the census • Small sample of persons who did not report a disability in the census was also included • Sample unit was a person not a household

NDS - Definition of disability • Filter question with five item difficulty scale • More than one filter question for some sections - e.g. Mobility & dexterity • Disability => score of 3 “moderate level of difficulty” or higher • Exceptions -> Sections F & G • Disability => score of 2 “just a little” or higher

  17. Health expectancy variables • Type and severity of disability • Aids used and needed • Age of onset • Current age • Cause of difficulty • Disease or illness • Participation domains • General health and stamina • Gender etc.

  19. Analyses contd. • CSO willing to do special analyses of the data after publication • Useful to have input from Task Force on most useful analyses from a health expectancies perspective

Sport and exercise module • In 2006 CSO did labour force survey module on participation in sport and physical exercise (15+) In the last 12 months did you participate in any physical activities for exercise, recreation or sport (e.g. walking, swimming, playing basketball or golf)? How would you describe your health in general? -> Excellent, Very good, Good, Fair, Poor

Sport and exercise contd. • 40,000 persons aged 15 and over in sample file • 63% of these active in the last 12 months • Could do some analyses by health status, disability status, levels of activity, age group, sport played etc. • Dataset was linked to labour force interview so some of the LFS variables are attached (educational attainment, employment status etc.)

Washington Group • Do you have difficulty seeing, even if wearing glasses? • Do you have difficulty hearing, even if using a hearing aid? • Do you have difficulty walking or climbing steps? • Do you have difficulty remembering or concentrating? • Do you have difficulty (with self-care such as) washing all over or dressing? • Using your usual (customary) language, do you have difficulty communicating, for example understanding or being understood?
