  2. Notations and Symbols BY Gp Capt (R) Muzaffar Ali

  3. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • The notations and symbols terminology used in the field of Electrical Engineering, in general as well as specifically for the coming courses will be as explained here. For currents and voltages measured / observed in electrical/ electronic circuits following types of quantities are seen.

  4. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • Total instantaneous quantities are denoted by a lowercase symbol with an uppercase subscript, for example, iA(t), vC(t). • Direct-current (dc) quantities will be denoted by an uppercase symbol with an uppercase subscript, for example, IA , VC. • Power-supply (dc) voltages are denoted by an uppercase V with a double-letter uppercase subscript, for example, VDD. • A similar notation is used for the dc current drawn from the power supply, for example, IDD. • Finally, incremental signal quantities will be denoted by a lowercase symbol with a lowercase subscript, for example, ia(t), vc(t). • If the signal is a sine wave, then its amplitude is denoted by an uppercase letter with a lowercase subscript, for example, IaVc,. This notation is illustrated in Fig. 1.16

  5. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • Total instantaneous quantities are denoted by a lowercase symbol with an uppercase subscript, for example, iC(t) { vC((t) etc}.

  6. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • Direct-current (dc) quantities will be denoted by an uppercase symbol with an uppercase subscript, for example, IC ( VC. Etc)

  7. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • incremental signal quantities will be denoted by a lowercase symbol with a lowercase subscript, for example, ic(t) {vc(t) etc}.

  8. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention • If the signal is a sine wave, then its amplitude is denoted by an uppercase letter with a lowercase subscript, for example, Ic ( Vc or Vem etc)

  9. Symbol Convention 1.4.9 Symbol Convention Power Supply Voltages and Currents • Power-supply (dc) voltages are denoted by an uppercase V with a double-letter uppercase subscript, for example, VDD. • A similar notation is used for the dc current drawn from the power supply, for example, IDD.
