  1. What is it? Characterization How a writer reveals a character. How a reader learns about a character. Why is it important? • Characters are important to the plot of a story. • Knowing the character helps the reader understand the story and the conflict. • It makes the story more interesting.

  2. Round Characters A round characteris one has many different character traits. They are much like a real person and have a fully developed personality. Many times the protagonist and antagonist are round characters. Flat Characters A flat character is one who has only a few character traits. They can be described in one or two words. They tend to be minor characters and serve a specific purpose to the story.

  3. Character Traits: Words used to describe a character. A character may have several different character traits. They should describe some aspect of the character’s personality or physical appearance. Sample Character Traits honest caring selfish sloppy brave determined You try it! Brainstorm in your group and come up with some other character traits. Make a list in your notebook.

Three Ways to learn about a Character: • Physical Appearance • How the character looks • How the character dresses • Any other physical objects that might be important. • Ex: Bud Caldwell carries around his suitcase with special object in it. • Words, Thoughts, Actions • What the character says about other characters • What the character says about the situation • What the character thinks or how the character feels about other characters • What the character says or thinks about other characters • Things the character does • How others react to the character • What others say about the character • How others feel about the character • How other characters treat the character
