Characterization • Direct Characterization: The author directly states the character’s traits. • Indirect Characterization: Readers have to draw conclusions about the character based on how the author reveals the character: • What the character SAYS (dialogue) • What the character DOES (actions) • What the character THINKS • What OTHER characters SAY about him/her

  3. Character Terms Protagonist: The main character of a story who has a problem Antagonist: The adversary of the protagonist; something or someone who creates obstacles for the protagonist
