  1. Argument and Analysis Saturday, 26 July 2014

  2. What could he do? • Look at the cards that I will give out. • In groups of 4, put them into piles For and Against cutting the rope. • What do you think is the most powerful reason you would have felt at the moment you cut the rope?

  3. Extract 9.2 • Do these quotations make you alter your view on this question?

  4. Explanation… • In your groups, prepare SIMON’S EXPLANATION for why he cut the rope. • Use the explanation table mat and identify the features of an explanation. • Use only the known facts and plan your explanations. • Chose a SIMON in each group and consider questions and answers that he might have had to face when he returned to “civilisation”. We might throw this open to the class as a whole.

  5. What points arise? • How does this look to an outsider? • Is there any hint of attempted murder? • Self defence? • Part of the acceptable risk of climbing mountains?

  6. Simon: • What would be his most convincing point when he had to tell Joe’s family of the death of their son/brother?

  7. H/W • List the reasons for the cutting of the rope in priority order.
