  1. Magnet Power Supplies K. Luchini • Overview • Hardware • Software • Documentation • Schedule

  2. OverviewMachine sectors with Magnets • Existing magnets • LINAC • Most: unchanged. Controlled by SLC Control System micros • Few :swap out ps and ps controller • TBD: sector 29 & 30 bulks w/ different current requirements • BSY – unchanged (w/one addition) • New Magnets • Injector • LTU • Most refurbished FFTB magnets with new ps and ps controller. All correctors will all have 120Hz fast feedback control • BSY – One new magnet, new ps and ps controller • Special double duty magnets • LINAC chicane magnets and magnets in sector 23, sector 29 and sector 30. • Total: New ? + Existing ? = ?

  3. Hardware • Test Stand • PSI 24V/10A PS with PS Controller • PSI VisualECS PC Software • Load • PS Controller Evaluation • Long-term stability with various current values • Analyze the PS operation sand current ripple around 0A • Measure the combined bandwidth of the PS + controller w/resistive and inductive load • Current ripple for various current values • Output voltage ripple for various output current values • Interlock action • PS operations and stability w/operating temperature up to 40 deg C. • Preliminary Results

  4. VisualECS Diagnostic Display

  5. Software • Test Stand • PowerPC Processor • vme64X crate • SBC IP Carrier – VIPC664 • PSI IP-Pac – Single port controls 2 ps controllers • PSI TM Module - 8 channel FO (2 ports/channel) • PSI PS Controller Chassis • PSI PS Controller Software • EPICS • SW with database. Upgraded to EPICS OSI independent R3.14.6 • Troubleshooting • Reverted to known working version with vxWorks OS • Determined problem was faulty ps digital controller card • PC Diagnostic Software – PSI Visual ECS version 2.03 • Runs from controller chassis front panel service port. • EDM displays downloaded from Diamond

  6. Documentation • Web page (under construction)http://www.slac.stanford.edu/grp/lcls/controls/global/subsystem/mgnt • Engineering Specification Document (ESD) • SLC-Aware IOC • SLC Magnet Functional Requirement Document • SLC Magnet Design Document • EPICS Magnet Functional Requirements document • EPICS Design Document • Task List – (under construction)

  7. Schedule • Simple communication between Alpha & SLC IOC Aware Magnet Hndlr (June) • Estimate PS Evaluation Complete (May) • Ongoing work • Calculate AC Power requirements for buildings • Calculate # of new ps • Calculate ps current required within 10%. Improve upon original BOE • Determine optimum PSI ps chassis configuration and layout • Rack profiles and location of free standing ps • Cabling and cooling requirements • List and answer any open questions • Weekly Magnet Meetings with physicists, power conversion engineers, hw engineers and sw controls • LTU/Dump/DSY – Underway • LINAC – Underway • Injector • Complete list of ps, ps controllers, and VME modules for Procurement (Summer 2005)
