  2. What is Linux? Linux is an operating system which • was invented by Finnish computer programmer Linus Torvalds • quickly became a serious rival to the MS Windows • has split the technology world into two • was freely distributed

Hard Ware Requirements • Any 80386, 80486, Pentium, Pentium II or higher • ISA, EISA, VESA Local Bus, PCI Bus • At least 4MB memory, for X-Windows, 64MB is better • Any MFM, RLL, IDE or SCSI hard drives with at least 1GB space • ATAPI, SCSI, IDE CD-ROM drive • MDA, Hercules, CGA, VGA or Super VGA video card and monitor

  4. Choosing a Linux distribution Linux distributions are available both via: • anonymous FTP • mail order on diskette, tape, and CD-ROM
