  1. Earth System Modeling Framework Documenting and comparing models using Earth System Curator Sylvia Murphy: murphys@ucar.eduJulien Chastang:chastang@ucar.edu http://www.esmf.ucar.edu http://www.earthsystemcurator.org/

  2. Introduction and Motivation • The Earth System Curator project, in partnership with the Earth System Grid (EG), is building a web portal that links model components and data together via metadata. • The portal enables components, models, simulations, and data to be searched, browsed, downloaded, and compared. • This is especially useful for Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPS) and Model Component Intercomparison Projects. • The portal is planned for use in IPCC AR5 as part of ESG. • An prototype will be used to support an NCAR summer 2008 colloquium on the comparison of atmospheric dynamical cores.

  3. ESMF to Curator Metadata Workflow XML File ESMF enables self-describing model components XML validated, converted to Java Objects and uploaded into ESG Database Models export metadata as part of the global attributes of the history files ESG database harvested and placed into Sesame store Metadata harvested as part of the publication process and placed in Sesame store Metadata presented via ESG search and trackback pages

  4. ESMF Metadata • Metadata encoded using the Attribute class • In ESMF v3.1.1, users will be able to create standard Attribute packets, for example for Field: • Long_name • Units • Short_name • Field and Array metadata can be aggregated into FieldBundle, ArrayBundle, and State metadata • Component Attributes done by the end of the summer • Current output is a tab-delimited text file. Future plans include validatable XML

  5. ESG Faceted Search

  6. Example Trackback Pages • Model Distribution: • http://cdp.ucar.edu:28080/query/queryResultsSync.htm?id=esg%3amodel_ccsm_3 • Scientific Properties: • http://cdp.ucar.edu:28080/query/queryResultsSync.htm?id=esg%3amodelcomponent_gef_dycore • Component Hierarchy: • http://cdp.ucar.edu:28080/query/queryResultsSync.htm?id=esg%3amodel_geos_5

  7. Component ComparisonTable • Select model components • Select criteria • Table generated dynamically • Eventually selections can be placed in a user’s saved workspace http://cdp.ucar.edu:28080/query/modelComparison.htm

  8. ASP 2008 Colloquium: Numerical Techniques for Global Atmospheric Models • 11 modeling groups with 13 atmospheric dycore components • Running 22 test cases at up to 5 resolutions • Component comparison table • Automated upload of simulation data, publishing, and comparison • Current PCMDI tables are static, hard-coded, non-searchable • Data search and browse via ESG Gateway • Presentation on use of metadata for MIPs for student attendees
