Cornwall Earth Day Proposal

This presentation aims to share the history of Earth Day activities in Cornwall, demonstrate the value of the city's involvement, and secure a commitment from the City Council to lead a committee for defining Earth Day activities. It also highlights the activities of other cities and proposes the creation of an Earth Day Committee in Cornwall.

  1. Earth Day ProposalApril 22, 2009

Purpose of presentation • To share with City Council history of Earth Day activities to date(led by Parks Canada). • To demonstrate value added of City’s involvement & leadership in Earth Day. • To secure commitment from Council to lead creation of a Committee tasked with defining scope of Earth Day activities for City of Cornwall.

  3. History of Earth Day within Cornwall • In 2006, Parks Canada started cleaning up the waterfront from St. Lawrence College to the canal (from waters edge to the bike path) as a way of making a contribution to the City we live and work in. • Parks Canada repeated this activity in 2007 and 2008 with increases in participants and increased distance. • Last year the River Institute cleaned the area around the College.

  4. 2009 Earth Day clean up • This year, Parks Canada is again planning to lead a clean up activity. • We will meet in the parking lot at the Civic Complex at 12:30 in the afternoon on April 22,2009. We will supply garbage bags, plastic gloves and water to drink.

What other cities are doing on Earth Day • Hundreds of cities around Ontario are actively involved in a variety of Earth Day Activities. • Visit www.earthday.ca and go to events for a full listing of cities and their level of involvement and activity ideas. • Kingston has 2 events while Ottawa has 8 Kitchener 10 and Toronto 17. • Parry Sound has 2 clean up events and Pembroke has 1. • Cornwall is not on this list.

Proposal for consideration • City of Cornwall to take the lead in creating an Earth Day Committee. • Earth Day Committee to propose vision and define possible activities and actions to realize the vision. • Creating the vision and defining possible activities could be done in an engaging fashion and involve Cornwall’s residents.

Benefits for City of Cornwall (& City Council) • City benefits from clean up activities. • Citizens who participate feel better and get some physical activity at the same time. • City can promote itself as a clean and earth friendly city. • City Council is seen as being proactive and creative in their efforts to improve the City’s appearance and promoting a cleaner environment without any additional costs. • Supports the “Cornwall as a clean city” image.

  9. Demonstrates to the rest of the world that Cornwall is a place you want to visit, work in and live in. • High likelihood of positive media coverage from various clean up or earth day activities.
