The students: • Conducted their own research and were identify the plant • Contacted local environmental • Learn how it is affecting this ecosystem • Created a website to educate our community about the health of the pond and about the historical significance of this ecosystem. • Created a Survey Monkey file to assess how much the community was able to learn about the problems affecting the pond after visiting the website. • This project illustrates how the students were able to take an issue affecting an entire community and use technology to educate others about its effects. As a result of their project, over 200 community members visited the site and completed the survey. Additionally, their project caught the attention of Senator Ken LaValle and Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner. The Town of Brookhaven has now begun to plan on having the pond dredged to remove the invasive plant and restore this ecosystem to its natural habitat.
