  9. 1934 • Reichstag Fire • Hitler makes Deutschland Pact with the army • Night of the Long Knives • All leaders of the Brownshirts (SA) are killed • Hitler declares himself fuehrer over Germany

  10. 1935 • Mussolini invades Ethiopia • Hitler begins to defy Treaty of Versailles • Holds a draft • FDR passes first Neutrality Acts • Hitler passes Nuremberg Laws

  11. 1936 • Hitler & Mussolini send troops to Spain • FDR elected to 2nd term as President • Hitler sends troops into Rhineland • Hitler & Mussolini form Axis Powers

  12. 1937 • Japan invades China • FDR adds to Neutrality Acts • Hitler annexes Austria

  16. 1941 • FDR & Churchill form Atlantic Charter • Basis for the United Nations • Dec. 7- Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor • Germany & Italy declare war on US • US mobilizes • Germany invades USSR

  17. 1942 • Japan has control of Pacific & Philippines • Hitler controls Europe, Med., & N. Africa • Hitler orders Final Solution • Extermination of Jews • US victories at Coral Sea & Midway halt Japanese expansion in Pacific

  18. 1943 • Germans surrender to Russia at Stalingrad • US defeats Rommel in North Africa • Italy surrenders to Allies

  19. 1944 • US defeats Germany in Rome • June 6- D-Day- Allies invade France • Paris liberated in August • Battle of the Bulge begins • FDR elected to 4th term as President

  20. 1945 • Allies begin final assault on Germany • Feb-US wins back Philippines & Iwo Jima • April 12- FDR dies, Truman takes over • April 30- Hitler commits suicide • May 8- VE Day (Victory in Europe) • August 6- Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima • August 8- USSR declares war on Japan • August 9- Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki • August 15- VJ Day (Victory in Japan) • United Nations is born
