  1. Concussions

  2. What is a Concussion? “Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the way the cells in the brain normally work.”

  3. Recognizing a Concussion • Concussions do not always involve LOC • Mechanism of injury ANY traumatic blow to the head or to another part of the body • Consider ALL signs and symptoms (S/S)

  4. Signs and Symptoms • Loss of Consciousness (LOC) • Numbness or tingling anywhere • Post traumatic amnesia (PTA) • Retrograde- Short term memory • Antegrade- Long term memory • Headache • Dizziness, Blurred Vision, or/and Nausea • Asymmetry pupils and eye tracking • Disorientation, dazed look, or balance problems

  5. Protocol • If an Athlete takes a shot to the head take them out of the game for 15 minutes. • Do an initial assessment, any LOC EMS must be activated to evaluate the athlete. • After a FULL 15 minutes, use the Check-off list to determine return to play. If they have any signs or symptoms during second check off list, DO NOT CONTINUE!!!! • If they do not have any signs and symptoms after 15 minutes, continue onto function tests.

  6. Head Injury Check-off List Must pass all tests in order to return to play. Remember this even if they say they just blacked out. And blacking out is LOC, EMS needs to be called. Use Functional tests to confirm your physical examination. You don’t need to do all of them but enough to confirm to you that they are okay. If the athlete or coach gives you grief call Dr. Miller or Jodi

  7. Observation Form If you suspect a concussion, this form is stapled to the check-off form and should be given it to a person who will be with the athlete for the next 24 hours.

  8. When in doubt, Sit them out!
