  1. The Universal Black Cross NursesBy: AbbieMunden and Jordan Ignacio

  2. History of the Group • The Universal Black Cross Nurses were groups of black female nurse, which were formed during the world wars. They started their organization in Vancouver B.C. They lived in times of discrimination and this affected their cause.

  3. Goals • The Nurses wanted to volunteer in the hospitals, which would have been needed in that time of war. They didn’t only want to nurse people, they were fighting for their people’s equality and their civil rights.

  4. Methods • The nurses waged a campaign for acceptance into the American Red Cross and the U.S military. They blended professionalism with race awareness. They encouraged other black people to demand more opportunities and responsibilities, by their battle against the white power structure.

  5. Impact • The Nurses impacted many ways people treated blacks, they influenced people to respect their race more. They helped encourage other blacks to take a stand against discrimination. They also helped open the medical filed for black people and helped attain more rights for women.

  6. People’s Thoughts on the Group • People were grateful for the nurses service in the war and their basic hospital services. They helped open people’s eyes to let blacks and women get more rights.

  7. Legacy • The Nurses still exist today, there is a group of black cross nurses, black men and black women, in Belize, Central America. This group is a group of black women who help out people in the name of their own people. They also provide services to the elderly.

  8. What They Teach Us • The Universal Black Cross Nurses teach us of the strength of their people. They tell us that there were strong rebels against discrimination. They even helped people in their act of rebellion.
