  3. Today’s Objective • Students will analyze the different arguments for “What is Terrorism?”, in an attempt to comprehend why certain groups would engage in such actions

  4. What is Terrorism?What is an example? • “One person’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.” • “Pre-meditated, politically motivated violence against noncombatant targets.”- Title 22, US Code • “The calculated use of violence to elicit fear.” -US Dept. of Defense • “An act carried out to achieve a corrupt objective and involving threat to security.”-Iranian religious scholar Tashkiri

  5. Scenarios • #2- Tactics used by colonists in Revolutionary War • #3- Ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and Bosnia; also, Native Americans • #4- Radical anti-abortion groups • #5- Irish Republican Army, 1920 • #6- Iraq during 1980s and ‘90s • #7- Algeria and Pakistan • #8- United States, Syria

  6. Formative Assessment • 1. In a sentence, what is your preferred definition of “terrorism”? Why?

  7. Edmodo • What should the US government do to combat Terrorism? Explain.

  8. Entry Slip • Explain 2 reasons why terrorists or revolutionaries engage in their actions.

  9. Daily Objective • Students will understand that any policy regarding terrorism has both benefits and costs, as well as a specific objective • Students will articulate their own views regarding the fight against Terrorism

Islam- Sectarian (Group) Beliefs • Sunni Muslims- believe national leader can be any Muslim; Muslims should follow the words and actions of Mohammed • Shi’ite Muslims- national leader should be a descendant (bloodline) of Mohammed • Mohammed’s grandson Hussein was killed while in power, became a martyr • Conflict began in 8th Century with Mohammed’s death

Israel- History • Judaism- believes Israel is the Holy Land of the Old Testament (Land of Zion and Jerusalem) • Area was conquered by the Muslims in the 8th Century (called Palestine) • The British seized control in 1917 • Holocaust (World War 2)- 6 million Jews killed • 1947- Palestine is given to the Jews by the United Nations Jewish Nation of Israel created in 1948 (United States is the first to recognize statehood)

Israel • Problem: what about the 5 million Muslims (called ‘Palestinians’) already living there? • Currently “allowed” to live in the West Bank and Gaza Strip under Israeli law and government • Israel and the UN recognize the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in West Bank– Palestinians allowed some self-governance • They do not recognize Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as Hamas believes in violent overthrow of all Jews

Solutions for Israel • Israeli Government • Extremely hesitant to give up any land • Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) • Recognized Israel; Promotes negotiation; Recognized by Israel and the UN as legitimate representatives for the Palestinian people • United States • $3 billion annually in aid to Israel; military allies • United Nations • Should they place permanent peacekeeping troops in Israel? • Hamas • Wants complete removal of all Jewish government and claims • Rest of Muslim World • Side with Palestinians, but torn between diplomacy and violence

OPEC • Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries • 12 members: Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela • Members work together to control the supply of oil in world markets, in an effort to manipulate oil prices • 2/3 of world’s oil (petroleum) reserves • 1/3 of world’s oil production 30 million barrels per day

Benefits of Oil • Most OPEC members have nationalized oil (the gov’t has taken control), so all sales of oil result in extra government revenue • How America uses oil Converted from crude oil into: • Fuel (gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel) • Electricity • Lubricants • Paints • Plastics • Detergents and fertilizers
