Purpose Find, check and organise quality evidence based knowledge, on infection prevention and control, infectious diseases and public health relevant to infection prevention and control including: - • Systematic reviews of high quality studies • Research • Nationally recognised guidelines • Internationally recognised guidelines • Local guidelines approved by a national organisation • Local quality assured guidelines/education packages

Reality • Searches, reviewing RSS feeds, adding new documents/guidance and seminal research • Checking/updating all documents on an annual basis or more frequently if superseded by new documents, checking URL links etc • Checking organisations news pages for new/updated publications or news topics to share with readers • Contact NRIC queries plus e-mails • Promotional work such as conferences, study days etc Document reviews and policy template work does suffer

  4. Audience • Primarily Infection Prevention and Control Professionals but increasingly because infection prevention and control is everybody’s business all healthcare professionals with patient, client contact or contact with the healthcare environment

  5. Reality • Infection prevention and control professionals still the main audience • Increasing interest from a wide range of healthcare professionals, industry and the public • International interest especially from Europe Charts demonstrate success of conference promotion

  6. Stakeholders • Department of Health/City University (CeRC) • Professional organisations, NHS, Royal Societies and Colleges, Charities and Organisations allied to, or with an interest in, infection prevention and control • Infection prevention and control professionals

  7. Reality • Contact with stakeholders limited except for times when special projects are undertaken such as Infection Control Knowledge Update or during promotion of specialist weeks or at conferences • Work hard at maintaining links but with merger of some organisations, frequent changes of staff/responsibilities and the voluntary nature of many organisations lead/exec posts input for them is difficult

  8. Subject Scope • Relevant, up to date, evidence based policy, guidance and information published within the last 5 years where possible, on infection prevention and control and in collaboration with NeLI, links to evidence based information on infectious diseases

  9. Reality • Policy and guidance from Professional organisations, NHS, Royal Societies and Colleges, Charities and Organisations allied to infection prevention and control • Infection prevention and control research and educational material more difficult to access or include • Pass word protection - NHS Estates/DH/IPS documents not always freely available without NHS password

Achievements 2008/09 • Has increased in popularity as a ‘one stop shop’ instantly disseminating evidence in a timely manner to IC professionals • A unique website with a unique feature - quality assurance of resources in the form of a Reviewers Assessment • NRIC Advisory Board has brought together key stakeholders with a special interest in IP&C in the UK • Continued promotion of the importance of Infection Prevention and Control at conferences and meetings • International interest in NRIC is growing from partners such as ECDC, WHO, IFIC and others

Achievements cont: • Numbers of users increased to 52,602 in 2008; at the same time visits were recorded from 165 different countries • An evaluation conducted in 2008 demonstrated user satisfaction with and popularity of NRIC and a need for the resource to continue and develop further • Infection Prevention and Control Knowledge Weeks were successfully run in 2007/08 and will be promoted again during National Infection Control Week 2009 • A monthly eNewsletter provided updates by e-mail and is now subscribed to by over 3,500 users

Achievements cont: • NRIC became a member of the International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) in 2008 and has received an invitation to present at the prestigious IFIC 2009 congress • NRIC was involved in the Global Hand-washing Day (15th October 2008) and has received an invitation to participate in the WHO led Global Patient Safety Day (May 5th 2009) • ‘Update’ area on website used to remind visitors to the site of important events such as Antibiotic Awareness week, World AIDS day etc

Action Plan 2009 and beyond…………….. • Business case for continuation and development of the NRIC website into the remainder of 2009/10 and beyond • Editorial Board with regular planned meetings and agenda • Continued evaluation of web logs - NRIC/NeLI site usage and following national knowledge updates for research • IP&C National Knowledge Update planned for Autumn 2009 focusing on new evidence available

  15. 2009 and beyond…………….. • Continued promotion of IP&C through NRIC resources at national and international conferences, meetings and local study days • Update of format used for monthly eNewsletter publication • Journal publications • Ontology development
