  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBVUlgG8Lm8 • Watch the above link to a video clip. Pay special attention to the following and be prepared to comment on these items: • -What happens when each student reveals their passion? • -What is meant by the line “Don’t mess with the flow?” • -What is meant by the line “Stick with the stuff you know?” Getting started!

  2. Today’s lesson will begin with a look at cliques.

  3. Man has always been divided into different stereotypes. Whether it’s how much money you have, beauty, skin colour, politics or religion • (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwnxRx6cFdc)

  4. Often these divisions begin forming in school. Students often divide themselves into groups, the name for this type of group is a clique.

  5. Cliques A small group of people with shared interests, views, patterns of behaviour and sometimes ethnicity, they spend time together and exclude others.

  9. nerds

  10. skaters

  11. Believe it or not looking at how cliques work can help us better understand history! Let’s analyze and figure out the connection. Step1 :Work with a partner to define each of the groups in the slide show

  12. Step 2: if you had to put each clique in a social order which group would be at the top and which group would be a the bottom? Rank them. Explain your ranking?

  13. Let’s make some history connections. New France was also divided into different groups. Take a few minutes and discuss with those around you what some of these different groups were/might have been. What different groups did new France have?

  14. Some of the groups in New France included: • First Nations • Irish • French Men • Black Slaves • French Women Now take a moment to rank these groups and briefly explain your ranking. What similarities are there between how you ranked the cliques and how you ranked the individuals in the new France society?

  15. Just as with our school social groups, how people were ranked in New France society had a lot to do with the power that they held. Below see the groups ranked and some of the reasoning. • 1)French Men (Seigneurs, Jesuit Priests, Soldiers Coureur de Bois) – “First Settlers” • 2)French Women (Ursuline Nuns, Filledu Roi,)- Could not vote, many expected to stay at home • 3)Habitants - Got their hands dirty clearing the land, taking care of animals • 3)Irish- Second big group to arrive. Immigrated after the French for work and opportunity but similar cultural background to the French • 4)First Nations – Thought to be “backward”, weapons not as advanced as the Europeans • 5)Black Slaves- Thought of as sub-human (less than human), meant to serve End of part 1

  16. PART 2 • What Clique would you place yourself in? Would you classify yourself as something else? Do you fit into more than one clique? Take a minute think about this question and prepare to share. The problem with putting people into a single category

  17. Most of us cannot be placed into a single category, however in New France they didn’t take the time to discover they different sides of people. How might this have contributed to the less than proper treatment of various groups in the society ex. continued poor treatment of First Nations people and the enslavement of black slaves? How might this have contributed to conflict? We can not be boxed

  18. How have things changed in terms of the social order in society today? How do we see different groups? • -Different cultures • -Women • -Men • -First Nations • Research the following and comment on the similarities between now and then: • Kim Campbell, Michelle Jean, H&M Headdresses pulled from Canadian shelves, Average income of males verses females Investigate

  19. -Use the post-it clues to research the present • -Think of Keywords to type into a search engine to research the past • How do you think this effected the way people felt in New France on a daily basis? Investigate

  20. We have grown, we have recognized that people are not solely meant to serve only one purpose. History teaches us a great lesson, not to repeat the mistakes of the past! At the school level and later in life when we run into different groups, we must be open-minded. • Unfortunately, New France was a society divided. conclusions
