  2. Getting Started… What are some of the things that interfere with your being able to get started writing a paper? • What to write about • How to begin • Focused on length requirement • NO PREWRITING!!!!

  3. Before you get started: Remind yourself that: 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell the reader 2. You want to communicate those ideas to the reader

  4. Selecting a subject: • Start early • Find your best space • Select something in which you have a strong interest • Narrow a large subject

  5. Finding your essay’s purpose & focus: • Why are you writing about this topic? • Does the reader need to be informed, entertained, or persuaded? (what might be different about how these are done?) • What do you want your writing to accomplish?

  6. Prewriting Techniques • Listing- jot down all ideas that pop into your head about a topic • Freewriting- simply start writing for 10-15 minutes • Clustering (mapping)- subject in middle of paper, and circles that come from the main circle (see board) • Interviewing- discuss paper with a peer, and be bale to answer Who? What? Why? How? When? Where?
