  1. Digital Repository support for Consortium Dr. Devika P. Madalli Documentation Research & Training Centre Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  2. Digital Repository • an ideal way to capture, preserve, and disseminate the intellectual output of a university, consortium, or discipline-specific organization CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  3. Prerequisites for forming a consortium for successful resource sharing • Common domain interests • Financial resources – consortium is not about cost shaving only! • Technology • Manpower • Policy and Governance support CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  4. Challenges in accessing Consortia Resources The end user is forced to learn and interact with as many interfaces as products available and this leads to stress and confusion. It results in very low usage of the subscribed resources. CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  5. Some Solutions Linking and Serial Management Service by other publishers Examples: PubMed's LinkOut, Silverplatter Silverlinker, ISI Web of Science, OCLC Electronic Collections Online, Cambridge Scientific, EBSCO CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  6. Limitations Offer links only to content from publishers with which these companies have agreements, or that a library accesses within a specific service CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  7. Others • Cross-Ref -- A publishing industry initiative to enable article linkages across participating publishers • Federated searching -- Multiple vendor implementations, e.g., Ex Libris SFX and Endeavor Encompass • Metadata harvesting -- being developed through the Open Archives Initiative • Serials Management -- TDNet and SerialsSolutions: fulltext list generation, URL generation to load MARC-like catalog records into local catalog CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  8. OpenURL for accessing Consortia Resources OpenURL is a • Mechanism for transporting metadata and identifiers • Describes a publication (Reference Resources) for context sensitive linking • Designed to support mediated linking from information resources to library services • Works with ‘Link Resolver System’ • Facilitate seamless access to the referenced resource CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  9. Terminology • OpenURL– A NISO standard (Z39.88), by which web links (URLs) are created containing metadata, allowing the linking directly to reference resources • Source– A citation database where an image or link appears; this link is an openURL that points to a link resolver. • Targets– The items listed in the results window: the full text dbs, Catalog, Ask-a-Librarian, Google. CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  10. Terminology • Link Resolver– Software that interprets an OpenURL and creates links to targets. • Base URL– The URL of a link resolver server. • Knowledgebase– The database containing all the library’s holdings. CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  11. Benefits of OpenURL linking For the librarian: • Central administration of links • Local control over what types of links are offered and to where they resolve • Optimizes use of licensed resources CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  12. Benefits of OpenURL linking For the user • Desktop delivery of full text when available electronically • Expands the research horizons • Consistency and accuracy of links CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  13. OSS tools for OpenURL • CUFTS (knowledge base) • GODOT (Link Resolver) and • dbWiz (Federated Search Engine) CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  14. CUFTS: open source serial Management • CUFTS is online knowledgebase of full-text journal collections. • Provides libraries to develop their sites of searchable serials databases • MARC records for library catalogue • Directs to article OpenURL link resolving, and ERM tools. CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  15. Function • CUFTS serves as knowledge base and contains a variety of resource types including Journal collections and databases called as “Global Resource” • From the Global Resources libraries can select and activate their “Local Resources” CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  16. GODOT (Link Resolver) • It is a Link Resolver Software • Provides direct Full-text Links from CUFTS knowledge base • Holdings in the Catalogue or in other location • Interlibrary Holdings Locator and Requesting CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  17. dbWiz – Federated Search Engine • dbWiz is an Open source federated search engine • Allows to search multiple databases, websites, catalogues, and other online resources from a single interface • Presents the result in an integrated list CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  18. CONT… OpenURL linking RESULT PAGE SOURCE dbWiz Search GODOT LINK RESOLVER FULL TEXT CITATION OpenURL DATA ABOUT LIBRARY’S COLLECTION CUFTS knowledge base Fig. How OpenURL works?

  19. Need for DL support to Consortium • Digital assets requires tools to organize the content according to library’s own preferences • Integration of digital collections with institutional portals and e-learning systems • Preservation of Digital Object CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  20. DL support features • Gives permanence to digital assets of libraries • Full-text searching • Personalized email notification of newly published content • Browsing by date or author or keywords • Authorized Access to documents/collection • Usage statistics CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  21. DL support features • OAI compliant • Data exporting as XML for Federated Searching CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  22. Organize the digital collection into type of resources, enabling: Categorization of documents according to Papers & publication Educational resources Special collection Closer view to DL CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  23. Administrative Supports to Consortium • Ingesting • Metadata editing • Collection management CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  24. Administrative Support • Ingesting: handles the loading of objects into the Repository. • Metadata Editing: Editing of descriptive or other object metadata (for example, technical or preservation metadata) • Collection Management: organizing objects into structured collections that facilitate end-user navigation. CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  25. Resource Discovery • search for object metadata or the full text of documents, • navigate through an institution's predefined collections CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  26. Authorized Access • Regulating end users' viewing privileges according to parameters like user status, etc CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  27. Service Layers • Integrated services (Single sign-on) • Common Centralised Search Interfaces (similar to SFX) • Alerts • Discussion forums • Document Delivery CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata

  28. Thank You CBSOR,Indian Statistical Institute 30th March 07, ISI,Kokata
