  1. Ceramics Sun/ Picasso Style “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” — Pablo Picasso http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/Lessons/Picassun.htm

  2. Who is Picasso? • Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan NepomucenoMaría de los RemediosCipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, known as Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer. • One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture.

  3. Just for your education… • Arguably Picasso’s most famous work is his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War – Guernica. This large canvas (over 50 feet long) embodies for many the inhumanity, brutality and hopelessness of war. • Look closely since you will be asked what it is you see and why you think Picasso painted these images.

  4. Ceramic Cubism • Designing a sun wall hanging allows you to express emotions through a symbolic image of the sun. Notice some of the suns have shapes for noses, cut outs for the mouth and cheeks.

  5. Terms • Symbolic images - the practice of representing ideas or emotions by symbols. • Slab roller - A machine that presses clay into a flat and even slab for use in pottery. It consists of a large, flat table with a cylindrical roller which is rolled over the clay using a handle or wheel attached to a set of gears. • Potter’s needle - The large, 1-15/16” long, sharp, heat-treated steel needle is set in a 1/2” diameter hardwood handle for a sturdy grip. Used for many tasks in ceramics from cutting, carving, detailing, and piercing for air bubbles. • Air dry - Drying the pottery and clay objects is an important step in getting it ready to be fired. There are two overriding considerations. 1) Clay objects, especially those with protuberances or uneven thickness (e.g. handles) need to be dried evenly. 2) All clay should be bone dry (no water content) before being loaded into the kiln for bisque firing. • Bisque fire - the first firing and is usually only to between cones 04 and 06 • Cone 06 fire – Glaze fire that heats to about a temperature of 1873 degrees Fahrenheit, turns the chemicals in painted on glaze into its glass like form • Slip - Slip is usually the consistency of heavy cream. It is a liquefied suspension of clay particles in water often used to join pieces of clay together.

  7. Your Assignment • Design sun face on 9“ square tag board. Think about the emotion your sun will convey. Cut out with scissors.

  8. Wedge and roll out slab of clay (use the slab roller carefully.)

  9. Trace tag board sun onto clay and cut out with potter's needle or “pointy thing.” • Keep the rays of the sun attached.

  10. Drape over small upside down paper plate or bowl including the rays of the sun. • Add facial features- press or carve in, add by scoring and applying slip. Ideas for faces….keep the rays attached to the face.

  11. Carve, press in patterns and textures into the sun rays. • Clean up edges- smooth with a little water on your finger. Cup of water

  12. When drying on rack, place wadded paper under the face to keep the bulging shape. Remove the bowl or plate since the clay will shrink and possibly crack.

  13. The final stretch • Must air dry over 2-3 days before it can be bisque fired. • Once fired you may use colorful glazes to depict the emotion of your sun. • Work carefully since mixing glazes does not work…these are chemicals not paints. • Place on firing rack for cone 06 fire. • After firing, we will place a hook on the back for wall hanging.
