  5. Mono and Poly • Look at your prefixes • Mono- the term ‘mono’ means one or singular. • Poly- the term ‘poly’ means more than one

  6. Polytheism • Take a minute on a piece of paper and try to figure out what the term polytheism means.

  7. Answer • Polytheism is the worship of many gods. • Which civilizations that we studied worshiped more than one god?

  8. Monotheism • Belief in only one God. • Why are you telling us this Yarnell?

  9. ~One and Only One~ • The Hebrews were the first civilization that believed in one and only one god. All other religions of the time believed in more than one god.

  10. Another name for a god • Take two minutes; use anyone in the classroom ,except me, to determine another name for a god.

  11. What is another name for a god? • Another name given to a god is a deity. • Deity- any supernatural being worshiped as controlling some part of the world or some aspect of life or who is the personification of a force.

  12. Easier of Harder • Did having one god make life easier or harder for the Hebrews? • How did the rest of the world react to the Hebrews only having one god?

  13. A new religion is born • Judaism-the monotheistic religion of the Jews having its spiritual and ethical principles embodied chiefly in the Torah and in the Talmud.

  16. Hebrew God • The Hebrew’s called their god, Yahweh.

  17. Closure • Today we learned about polytheism, monotheism, deity, and the reasons the Hebrew religion was different from the rest of the worlds.
