  3. Did you know? • United States #1 for pregnant teens • 750,000 teens between 15-19 get pregnant each year • Higher rates in the south- 1. Mississippi, 2. New Mexico, 3. Texas • Wisconsin ranked #40, Minnesota ranked #41 • 1 in 3 women become pregnant before age 20 • 2/3 between 18-19

  4. Sub-Cultures • Hispanic-Americans: 70.1 live births • African-Americans: 59 live births • American Indians: 55.5 live births • Caucasians: 25.6 live births • Asian Americans: 14.6 live births

  5. Why get pregnant? • 80% of pregnancies are unintended • Uninformed about birth control • Not enough $ • “Won’t happen to me!”

  10. Ethical Aspects • Pregnant teens are still judged • Sex before marriage is bad • Teens seen as sluts, whores, irresponsible, etc • Sexually active teens wish they had waited

  12. Political Aspects • Abortion is illegal in 30 states • Legal in 20 under certain circumstances • In 38 states, at least 1 parent needs to know • Both parents in MN • Baby daddies take paternity tests- custody and child support

  14. Future for Teen Moms • 1.5% of teen moms get a college degree by age 30 • 80% of unwed teen mothers end up on welfare • Average income without a college degree = $30,000 • $11,600 a year to raise a child • Harder to have a career • Life is no longer “normal”

  15. What happens to the kids? • More likely to be born prematurely • Tend to do poorly in school • More likely to live in poverty • Higher rates of abuse and neglect • More likely to be incarcerated • More likely to become teen parents themselves
