Warm-Up: Answer the following questions while watching the video: Why did these young people think that getting pregnant couldn’t happen to them? In what ways did a pregnancy change their lives? How did the pregnancy affect their relationships. Teen Pregnancy

  2. Facts about Pregnancy & Prevention • Females can ovulate before their 1st period. • Sperm can live from 12 hours to 6 days in the female reproductive tract. • Fertilization is possible during menstruation. • It only takes 1 sperm & 1 ovum for pregnancy to occur.

  3. More Facts about Pregnancy & Prevention • Sperm can’t be flushed out of vagina by urinating. • Sperm can’t be flushed out by douching. • Pregnancy can occur standing up, in a tub, after just a few minutes of sexual activity. • Withdrawal is not a reliable method.

  4. Contraceptive Methods • Methods to prevent pregnancy • All have an annual failure rate. • No contraception = • 85% failure rate • NO STI prevention

  5. Spermicidal Foam • Non-prescription foam inserted into condom or vagina • Must remain in place for 6-8 hours afterwards • Failure Rate = 29% • NO STI Prevention

  6. Male Condom • Sheath placed on penis to catch semen. • Failure rate = 15% • STI Prevention • Most effective against HIV • Less risk reduction against other STIs

  7. Diaphragm • Prescription Only • Soft latex or silicone cup w/ flexible rim that covers the entrance to the cervix • Must be placed into the vagina prior to sexual activity & left in for 6 hours • Failure Rate = 16% • STI Prevention = NONE

  8. Oral Pill • Prescription hormone pills create changes to prevent pregnancy • Failure Rate = 8% • STI Prevention = None

  9. Depo Provera • Prescription injection of hormones given every 3 months • Prevents ovulation • Failure Rate = 3% • STI Prevention = NONE

  10. IUD • Prescription t-shaped device inserted into uterus • Prevents sperm from moving • Failure Rate = <1% • STI Prevention = None

  11. Abstinence • Deliberate decision to avoid sexual activity • Only method 100% Protection against pregnancy & STIs
