  2. ACUTE GASTROENTERITIS • Acute Gastroenteritis is diarrhea or vomiting, or both, of more than several episodes or days duration. • SYMPTOMS– Abdominal pain    – Diarrhea – Nausea and vomiting – Fever

  3. ACUTE GASTROENTERITIS PREVENTION – Wash hands thoroughly – Do not eat undercooked foods, especially meats – Thoroughly wash any produce (e.g. fruits, vegetables) before eating – Do not eat or drink raw foods.

  4. Meconium Aspiration Syndrome • Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is the aspiration of stained amniotic fluid, which can occur before, during, or immediately after birth. Meconium is the first intestinal discharge from newborns.

  5. Meconum Aspiration Syndrome Causes Meconium Aspiration Syndrome is • A pregnancy that goes past the due date • Difficult or long labor • Certain health issues experienced by the mother • And an infection Symptoms of Meconum Aspiration Syndrome. • cyanosis • Limpness and low blood pressure

  6. Croup • Croup refers to an infection of the upper airway, which obstructs breathing. • Symptoms Croup often begins as a typical cold. If there is enough inflammation and coughing, a child will develop a loud barking cough. This often is worse at night.

  7. Croup • Croup is usually caused by a virus infection, most often a parainfluenza virus. • Prevention To prevent croup, take the same steps you use to prevent colds and flu. Frequent hand-washing is the most important. Also keep your child away from anyone who's sick, and encourage your child to cough or sneeze into his or her elbow.

  8. Chickenpox • Chickenpox, also called varicella, is characterized by itchy red blisters that appear all over the body. The virus can spread through: • saliva • coughing • sneezing • contact with fluid from the blisters

  9. Chickenpox Symptoms • The non-rash • Fever • Headache • loss of appetite Prevention • limiting contact with infected people. • Chickenpox can’t be identified by its blisters until it has already been spreadable to others.

  10. Intussusception • Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children younger than 3. The cause of most cases of intussusception in children is unknown. Though rare in adults, most cases of adult intussusception are the result of an underlying medical condition, such as a tumor.

  11. Intussusception Symptoms • loud crying caused by abdominal pain. • Stool mixed with blood and mucus • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Fever Treatment • Treatment of intussusception typically happens as a medical emergency. • A barium or air enema.  • Surgery.
