  1. GIF Format: Things to Know Before Image Processing! It is the format that is mainly used on the internet. GIF images keep popping up in the pages that are made by amateurs. Before using them, it is good to know a few things about the format. Basics Things to Know GIF stands for ‘graphics interchange format’. CompuServe created it. The format includes some essential features that make it unique and valuable format for the internet. The features include file compression, transparency, interlacing and stores many images within a single file. It allows the animations that make the file format popular. Key Features A GIF image contains up to 256 colours which are stored in the colour palette or colour lookup table within the image file. Each colour in the colour table of GIF is mentioned in the RGB values, and each such value has a range from 0-255. CMYK colours are not possible in GIF. Although this format has access to over 16.8 million colours but only up to 256 colours can be accessed. Although it keeps the file size down, it is perfect for the on-screen viewing. GIF supports LZW compression, which is a lossless compression algorithm. Transparency is the main feature of the GIF89a format. It allows for the specification of one of the colours in the palette that can be ignored which processing the images of the display device.
